Its been 100 years since WW1 ended; it was the war to end all wars. Fought over Nationalism and secret packs.
It has been 83 years since WW2, and the end of German Fascism and the genocide of the Jews in Europe.
It has been 65 years since the Korean War. The fight was against the spread of communism.
It has been 4 years since Afghanistan, the fight over state sponsored terrorism. Where PTSD has affected alot of the returning soldiers.

War has not touched the Canadian population as a whole since WW2, for the majority of Canadians life goes on; even with the Korean War, Cold War, Peacekeeping in other countries, and Afghanistan happening in the background of daily Canadian life. The Canadian public has forgotten how to make sacrifices....

I hope people will remember that is was our Canadians troops that still allow Canadians to freely roam the streets in any city in Canada. Their sacrifice of life, limb and service have allowed the population to enjoy their freedoms. But sadly every body will pay their respects for the day and then conveniently forget what its about, if they do at all. Its their choice, but that choice was given to them by countless military persons making sacrifices on their behalf.
A lot of people take pride in their family history, why can't Canadians take more pride in their military heritage. Probably because its not advertized as much. There is no current CAF Utube video that gets thousands of hits...

Last year the budget for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) was 18.6 billion (Fy 16/17), this does not include capital purchases like ships, tanks, planes (these are separate purchases done by parliament). For those that think that its way too much, here are some cost of military hardware:

So in the next few weeks take some time and remember why you are free to think as you do. Remember the sacrifices other people have made for you...

Remember the Veterans and current serving members of the CAF and the sacrifices they have made for you.

You are incorrect which is for the most part the social agenda or group think that is brought to mind with regards to Remembrance Day.

In both WW1 and WW2 Canadians volunteered to serve and for the most part they were the proverbial "meat into the grinder" and used in a callous manor. They served and did their duty on FOREIGN soil to fight for the freedom
for other people.....Canada was never under threat....Canada was never invaded or the like. The guys that signed up did it with the ideal of fighting for the freedom of others....and that is what makes it noble/admirable.

of course neither of us were there, however in 1914 most who volunteered thought of themselves as a part of the Commonwealth and if Britain was at war we were too. Sadly, the young men thought it would be over by Christmas and most did not return or if they did they suffered horribly from Shell Shock. If anyone thinks that WW2 did not threaten our soil and freedom think again. Lives were lost and sacrifices made to keep Canada Free. I for one thank my grandparents and great uncles who all fought. They all talked of the threat that we could have been under. Lest we forget.

right here and now
Cutting to the chase, with no disrespect to our honored veterans, Remembrance Day firstly honours those brave and noble souls that fought and died in earnest in the First World War.
In the mud and the blood and the mayhem and the stench that this world had never endured before.
I can't imagine the terror felt- on both sides.
And it makes me weep......

I do my best to honour vets every day of the year, not just Remembrance Day. I usually keep the poppy, in my vehicle, all year round, and am thankful each time I look at it. I am a very emotional and empathetic person, I am always unable to go to Remembrance Day events because of it, and I honour them every other day of the year...because I'm a coward, in comparison

As I said Canada was never under threat as a country even with WW2.And for both Canadians VOLUNTEERED as there was no draft/conscription.In WW1 Britain was not under threat of invasion either, they came in defence of their ally France along with Russia on the other end.My grandfather was one the fortunate ones to survive Dunkirk.

This is the value of history. We honour the courageous who sacrificed all only if we do everything we possibly can to avoid repeating mistakes of the past and upholding the values of humanity in our present and future. We stand on the shoulders of people who gave their lives for the rights of freedoms we now enjoy. I feel blessed every day. For me, Remembrance day is not about honouring the dead, but honouring the spirit and courage of how they truly lived. I draw inspiration and resolve from Rememebrance, not sadness, but gratitude.

Very well said my friend.
As with this poem,

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915
during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium
By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

"FOR ALL TIME, LEST WE FORGET"

Wear your poppies proudly people, there are those in the world who wish they could.
Never forget that.

The British Columbia Public Schools Act makes THREE assemblies during the school year mandatory; first day of school, last day of school & Remembrance Day. It used to be one of my favourite jobs to coordinate that assembly, as well as to teach that poem to my 5th grade students so they could understand it not just memorize it...

How many younger people care about Remembrance Day enough to do more than look at an app?

I rarely see 20-somethings even bother to wear a poppy.

We also have a much-changed ethnic make-up, where a lot of people have no historical link to Remembrance Day.

That's why it's so important to teach the history of it through assemblies; so the kids learn about it & teach their parents!

You can thank the Lieberals fo this......makes me want to puke that the dilletante Trudeau whose whole family dodged fighting for Canada and whose policies fuck over veterans will wear one on Remembrance Day on Parliament hill
and spew the words written for him.....the script he is supposed to speak lest he come off as a total retard if he had to come up with his own words on the fly.
