The book I am currently reading is Pax Romana- War, Peace and Conquest in the Roman World. "Warfare banished to the frontiers, protected by the army..... the empire was prosperous because it was peaceful. "

Its funny alot of our laws come from Roman influence. Ever notice that there are alot of Latin phrases in our law.

So, what are you currently reading?

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

The gap between the history as it was written at the time, vs the myths that exist today is huge.

"Lost Lake," Phillip Margolin.

"Looking for Alaska," John Green (for, like the tenth time and I totally know it's a book for adolescent girls. Sue me.)

I have this weird habit a reading multiple books simultaneously. Here sre some books I'm reading or have just finished reading.

Non-fiction:

1. When Breath Becomes Air - By Paul Kalanithi
A posthumously published memoir by a physician who received a diagnosis of Stage IV lung cancer at the age of 36. Very poignant.

2. The Great Equalizer - By David M. Smick
A call for economic policies that will promote economic growth by encouraging Main Street capitalism (small businesses and start-ups) rather than Wall Street capitalism. Insightful and innovative.

3. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind - By Yuval Noah Harari
Human history through the millenia, right from the Big Bang. Nothing brief about the history. A grippingly written book.

Fiction:
1. The Storm - By Arif Anwar
2. The Space Between Us - By Thrity Umrigar
3. An American Marriage - By Tayari Jones

You might like The Ancestor's Tale by Richard Dawkins. He traces our evolutionary lineage backwards through common ancestors.

2 full pages that would make a good paperback novel.

Currently on my bedside table: "Born to Run" Bruce Springsteen's autobiography. Must read for any E Street Band fans! I'm also reading "The Witchwood Crown" by Tad Williams, which is a follow-up to his BRILLIANT Memory Sorrow & Thorn trilogy. My bedside bookshelf is pretty diverse...

I’m working on The Emperor of all Maladies”. It’s fantastic.

Then onto Women of the Silk and Year of Wonders. These two are also supposed to be amazing. But probably more female oriented. :)

Lavinia -- I was looking for a summer read and a physician friend recommended "Emperor of All Maladies."
I said a thick book on cancer seemed like a real downer.
"Trust me. This is a fantastic book," he said.
He was right. A bunch of amazing characters in a readable history about discovery and various treatments of the disease over the years. It's been a few years since I read it. I'm going to reread.

As to right now: "In the Woods" by Tana French. Scary detective novel set in Dublin.
