Incredible performance by Mark Ruffalo in Dark Waters. I was downtown on a weeknight and wanted to catch a flick, but felt like something non-mainstream blockbuster so i checked out Tinseltown which is great for playing these films (compared to friggin Metropolis where i live close to). Saw Dark Water without reading any reviews and glad I did.
Obviously, you MUST have seen Spotlight which Mark was nominated for an Oscar. The film was about a very scary, disgusting story revealed about the Vatican Churches mainly in Boston. After seeing that, I confidently knew Dark Waters was at least worth a watch w/Ruffalo.
I started to notice Mark Ruffao after Foxcatcher. I love how he acts so seamlessly without being dramatic. Yes, I totally enjoyed Spotlight. Once I noticed him, I went back and watched Shutter Island and Scorpio again. I can't even remember that he was in Collateral. He certainly is in a class of his own.

Best documentary nominee Honeyland, from Macedonia (try to find it on a map), was fantastic.

I think you mean Zodiac instead of Scorpio Hahah, close!
Indeed, Mark is very underrated for his serious dramatic acting. People just keep thinking of him as Hulk/Banner.
I recommend Begin Again as well, where he plays a music exec out discovering new talent and finds a cute Keira Knightley.

I think it was a good movie but VASTLY overrated.

It only won so the people at Oscars can virtue signal about how great and progressive they are to let a foreign film win 'Best Movie'.

Why bother have a best foreign film category, if non English films are considered in all main categories? The whole Oscars thing is a joke anyways and the public doesn't care anymore about their preaching from a pedestal, as evidenced by their record low ratings

Parasite was a unique movie to say the least, can't think of anything where it ends so differently and with such tragic consequences for moving on up. In reality all they did was really want a normal middle class life and it costs lives.

I agree. It should have won Best Foreign Language Film, but to win over-all was not only virtue-signalling, but a play for more Asian market share and partnerships.

Another political decision was American Factory for Best Documentary. It was a pretty stanard doc, with nothing unusual or ground-braking, or unique. It beat out other, more worthy docs like Honeyland, or The Cave, that took years, and where people risked their lives.

The people who applaud political preaching from Hollywood only do so because it meets their agenda.

I'd love to see the reaction if someone stood up and praised Trump.

I assume it would be the same as if someone stood up and praised Hitler. Trump is becoming more and more like Hitler every day. His lawyer's defense in the impeachment trial was essentially that Trump was justified in any actions that would help in his reelection since he deserves to be president 4 more years. What is ironic is that it is looking more and more like Biden will not even be the Democrat representative, so Trump got himself added to the very short list of impeached presidents for nothing lol.

The movie Jo Jo Rabbit was very timely considering what is happening in the USA at the moment. And btw, since this is a movie review thread, I will mention that Jo Jo Rabbit is a great movie!

First - you lose for bringng up Hitler. The craziness from the left never ends.

Second - You've just shown the charge Trump was going after a political foe was nonsense from the start. It was a last gasp at trying to pin something on Trump by Democrats. Not only had Biden not declared when Trump made the Ukraine call, but he was never going to be a serious candidate.

Third - JoJo Rabbit was my pick for Best Picture.

Not every decision is a product of the culture war. Parasite was an amazing film, certainly far more deserving than countless other shitheaps that have won best picture over the years.

Parasite was a really good, engaging movie and quite unique. It was worth paying to see it in the theatre. But I didn’t think it merited best picture. Mind you, I haven’t seen many of the other nominees. The Oscars are all about politics these days. I don’t have much respect for it as an award of merit.

Just saw The Gentlemen with Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnan, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant and many more. One of the best I have seen in a while. Well crafted (written and directed) by Guy Ritchie. Very entertaining and funny English whodunit.

I saw 1917 the other day. It was ok, but predictable and it was hard to care about the main characters.

I appreciate earlier recommendations for Red Sparrow and Game Night. Here are my comments:

Red Sparrow
Riveting, well done but a little confusing at times. If you start watching it you have to stick out until the end as it will all make sense then. Pay attention to the little details as they become important at the end. Time well spent.

Game Night
Lame, lame, lame. Didn't even watch it until the end. Overacting and contrived story line. It was just plain silly.

If you liked Red Sparrow, you might like Anna :

I would not say it is equal to Red Sparrow, but very still entertaining. And the female lead is HOT HOT HOT !!! She is Sasha Luss:

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm7712734/?ref_=tt_cl_t1

And in a strange coincidence, she grew up in Moscow and "frequently participated in ballet competitions before she suffered an ankle injury which prevented her from continuing " which will strike a chord with those of you that have watched Red Sparrow.

I was wondering if Sparrow and Anna were part of the Hollywood duo theme movies; 2 movies on the same subject.

Like 2 asteroid movies release with a year of each other.

I liked Anna better...

I finally got around to seeing Olympus Has Fallen yesterday. It was such trash. Die Hard trying to be James Bond, and failing.
