Hello!

I am moving next month, and am looking for recommendations on a good interior decorator. I love doing it myself, but just don't have the time at the moment.

I would require the following:

1) Assistance with selecting colors to paint the walls
2) Determining which of my current furniture to bring, and what doesn't work
3) Placement/layout
4) Sourcing items that need replacing and anything additional to create a beautiful but comfortable environment

My new place has a solarium, so a knowledge of plants would be an asset, but not required

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you may have.

Have a beautiful week!

if you are looking for a professional interior decorator for hire, I would go to one of the high end furniture stores in town like Inform Interiors in Gastown or some of the places in Yaletown and ask the owner or store manager who they would recommend

these stores deal with the decorator's all the time and know who might fit your needs after a brief discussion regarding your thinking

best of luck...

Any Benjamin Moore store will have a list of local decorators and home stagers as well. I wish I lived in Van since I used to do this for over 10 years along with Feng Shui. If you send me a few pics I can give some guidance from a distance... Hands on is always the best approach as the lighting in any given space is crucial. I love all sorts of plants, and love Bonsai as well. I'm sure you will make your new space just as magical!

While we are at it, how much would it cost to hire an interior decorator? I m sure a lot depends on what one wants but there has to be some sort of ballpark figure!

100/hr for decorating is what I charged in Toronto. It's a decent living especially when your clients follow you around the city for advice! :) Not sure what the market is like in Van, probably hasn't changed much. Maybe some of you Van peeps will have more local rates. Anyone who has seen my updates and renovations at my place knows I'm pretty out of the box and definitely know about colours. So much fun!

....and how many hours does it take on an average!

Can you give me a ball park figure for the total cost?

It really depends on how in depth the client wants to go... If its a simple colour change throughout the house and some basic advice on furniture placement probably 3 hrs tops... If you want to have a decorator take you step by step through every piece of furniture, shopping with you, tiles, counters, flooring, carpets, etc, placement of painting and other art and lightning, it may take 6-8 hrs a day for a week and meeting every day, with the client and the contractors... looking at let's say 600-800/day, so about 5000 -6000 for a week of consulting and taking you step by step the entire way. Some decorators may have a day rate like 500/day for a week block of time. It depends on the clients' needs and how much of a change they want to make...

Sometimes it is super helpful to have a second outside opinion with some out-of-the -box ideas, I know many many people who have hired other decorators and then hire me without knowing, and then comparing the results, was unbelievable! A person who has a natural talent for it is very different from a person who just recommends neutrals all the time with no clue as to analogous, monochromatic and triadic colour schemes, and from a person who can actually see and interpret how a hue of a colour will effect a space, compared to a person who does not know what a hue is, or light reflective value, these are basic things in decorating, much like the alphabet and if there is one thing I am an expert in is colour and ratios of colour in any space and how the lighting will effect it based on time of day, time of year, and location on the globe..

We have not even touched the tip of the iceberg in regards to patterns, texture and balance. It really does take years to Master, Been doing it now for over 15 yrs and it's second nature to me. I incorporated Feng Shui into my repertoire about 10 years ago when I discovered what it was. If you want my Fengshui website just pm me...

Anyways back to the original OP, I am sure Classy Angel you will find the decorator who is right for you. Vancouver is a big city, highly recommend trying a Bennie Moore Store for referrals to reputable decorators, as well and some of the ladies here have given suggestions. Even if you book a few to come in for an hr and have a look over, if you need more help than that, you can decide which one you feel more comfortable in dealing with. Colour is vibrations, therefore emits energy. You need someone who understand energy flow, how it effect us as humans and how do you want your space to FEEL... First step I always say, look to your wardrobe! It may sound funny but in my experience people prefer to surround themselves with the colours/textures/patterns they are attracted to in clothing. Sometimes disharmony is created when they choose colours that do not agree with them. For example, red and orange increases blood pressure. Subdued Blue and Green are calming and soothing. If you mostly wear denim and light pastels, having an entire room red or even worse, orange might be way too loud. In that case I'd recommend a blue and soft gold colour scheme with perhaps a mexican theme with teal/rust/wine accents and Antique gold. Just one basic example, if you are selling though a soft neutral palette is most likely best for the space you are selling. There are thousands upon thousands of colours so the only limit is our imaginations!

Regretfully I am not available. You should hire art students to come up with some concepts for you. I would have loved to get a gig like this way back when I was in school.
