One of the organizers of a Calgary food and music festival says it’s in for a name change in response to charges of racial undertones.

Circle the Wagons, a “travelling food, beer and music carnival,” first launched in 2014 as a collaboration between Village Brewery, YYCFoodTrucks and BassBus, is gearing up for its fourth annual festival next month.

But when it kicks off in Currie Park in southwest Calgary on Sept. 9, co-founder Jim Button said they will first take to the stage to announce a new name after hearing from members of the Indigenous community who were concerned the term “circle the wagons” hearkens back to a painful era of North American colonialism.

“I’m happy to change the name — I’m bummed out people took offense and I fully respect them,” Button said.

“Through careful thought we realized that the name was offensive to certain people so we’re going to change it.”

The Village Brewery co-founder said the name came together innocently enough, evolving from the need to have a fenced in area to serve alcohol. The decision was made to ring the area in food trucks to comply with city bylaws.

But Button acknowledged he began to hear rumblings of discontent about the festival’s name last year, though the idea of a rebranding wasn’t considered at the time.

Calgary Indigenous artist and educator Lee Deranger said she stumbled across it on Facebook, still with the same “offensive” name, after hearing last year some had raised the issue with organizers. From there, it spiralled on social media — including on the event’s own social media channels — with some demanding the name be dumped.

“I was quite surprised they were still using that name — I know that they had been asked to change it quietly and politely in the past,” she said.

“Using a term like circle the wagons has historic triggers, especially in these days, and we need to change that in this country.”

Deranger said the idiom evokes the image of settlers who were encroaching on ancestral lands, circling their wagons to fend off attacks from Indigenous people.

Michelle Robinson, a Ward 10 council candidate and former president of Aboriginal Peoples Commission of Alberta, said she and a handful of others raised the issue last year but didn’t seem to make any progress.

She said she’s pleased they’ve finally decided to recognize the problem and its effect on some people and hopes it will serve as an opportunity to further bridge the cultural gap.

“We’re at a special time where we’re doing a lot of education about Indigenous issues — at the end of the day, nobody has been taught these things,” Robinson said.

“Now there’s literally been a cultural shift and we’re beginning to see the fruits of that now.”

For Deranger, she hopes in addition to the name change there will also be a public apology and acknowledgement the event is taking place on traditional lands.

Button said organizers will do everything in their power to assuage any hurt by the festival’s name, though he noted they still need some time to change promotional materials, social media properties and even their foundation and bylaws.

“You really do have to be thoughtful and think about what everyone’s perspective is,” he said.

As taken from the Calgary Herald online.

This PC bullshit is getting out of hand.Truth be told it got over the top about 15 years ago and the saddest thing is that children are being brainwashed with this crapulence in the education system.

I'm going to take a wild guess that you're a white male. Every anti-PC person I've ever met or read has been a white male.

Before commencing a rant, consider the perspective of others. I don't believe in PC myself. But I do believe in empathy and treating others as THEY wish to be treated.

At the end of the day, they can call it whatever. It's a festival with great music and food, right? Who cares what it's called.

Not changing the name was hurtful to some. How is changing the name hurtful to you? The people actually involved sound ok with it. Are you pissed with them for their respectful response too?

If this is how you react to something that has no impact on you at all, I'd hate to think how you'd react to something truly important, like someone changing the menu at your favourite restaurant or something.

If you actually thought, instead of just reacting with your left knee jerking, I didn't say anything was hurtful to me. I am questioning those who are overly sensitive to every perceived slight. We must all change for everyone who is offended? How many does it take to be offended before we must change? One, two, or in this case one "and a handful of others." Your handle offends me. I once knew an elder who went by that name and passed away. Please change it
I was responding to storm rider. Your comment was added somewhere between when I started composing and when I posted. i.e. That wasn't directed at you so cool your jets.

But since you brought it up, my point was that the offended and the ones who committed the "offence" are in agreement so it seems pretty damned absurd that uninvolved third parties such as here might be offended on behalf of those actually involved when they didn't have an objection to complying. If they agreed the number of people who agreed really doesn't matter, be it 1 or 1000.

...Let me put this more succinctly: they weren't forced to change the name. Someone asked and they thought "ok". That's what the quote says: "I’m happy to change the name — I’m bummed out people took offense and I fully respect them."

So I'm not having a "leftist knee jerk reaction". As I read it the only people currently with their knickers in a knot are the ones troubled by these guys being willing (not forced) to accommodate. Again, seems a bit absurd when you think about it.

You're right Storm Rider, it is out of hand, and judging by the responses from people on this board it is only going to get worse.

If "circle the wagons" is offensive to the Native pop then so be it- but it seems innocuous to me.
The term can be used in any number of defensive situations- not just when the Dallas Cowboys have "circled the wagons" and gone into a defensive shell to "hold the fort" against the Washington Redskins, who are "on the war path" with a fourth quarter comeback.
Village Brewery better be careful - wouldn't want to get people riled up when they only want to "chug" a beer.
It's really all in the context- anything can get spun.....depending on the special interest involved.

Admittedly the world is full of snowflakes, but I include those who are outraged and hurt by political correctness. Is it that big of a deal someone changed a concert name before it happened? Is it that big of a deal a group of women held a "Woman Only" viewing of Wonder Woman? I think the world is an overly sensitive place, but why bother dwelling on it?

In this case the creator of the concept admitted he was baffled at the outrage but he decided to change it. Why? Because he's a smart business man and he knows he's in business to make money NOT to take political sides. What's the other option? To end up in a controversy like what happened to Earls?

PS. Village Brewery's Blacksmith is a fucking awesome dark beer. #Cheers.
I agree- no big deal on this scale.
The promoter is smart enough to move past it- he knows how to keep his bannock buttered.
There are many other more important hills to plant your banner on.

I am sure the Romans used an equivalent phrase when their army was attacked by the Goths.

Or the the Spartans when fighting whoever.

Or the Brits fighting the Boers.

^^ I tried to make this point in my first post: does it offend others? If not, then carry on! This requires listening and respecting to their thoughts and also relies on them speaking up. If it is offensive, then use another word.

The fact that the examples you provide are still in common use MOST LIKELY means it's not offensive.

I'm still not sure why it bothers people to be asked NOT to use a word. Is respecting others really that hard? We're not a nation at war. We're not breeding our youth to be Spartan-like warriors to defend the country against enemies hell bent on stealing our women and precious metals. Adding a little empathy and yes, that cursed word: sensitivity, to our regimen is part of living in the 21st century of growing population and dwindling resources.

Give the Social Justice Warriors the time and those words and phrases will be unacceptable and helped by the leftist media. At the same time this mantra is being brainwashed into kids via the education system.I have to go to the dentist on Saturday and I know I will see a plethora of Macleans magazines for my reading pleasure(which I will of course ignore) back when I was a kid when I went to the dentist what was on offer for reading material was "Bedtime Stories by Chester A Arthur" which was a pretty big collection of hard cover books that espoused good christian values.Cant have ANYTHING like that now....having a publication like that NOW in a dentists waiting room would result in the office being picketed for being racist or in the current PC terms being an "Islamaphobist dentist" and that is about as ridiculous as the Seinfeld episode where Jerry is labelled as an "anti dentite".

I guess my point is that these microscopic special interest groups get far too much of a voice and the leftist media chime right in and amplify it.Give them an inch and they take a mile is a good comparison for what is going on these days.

I myself am sick to death of it.When I was a kid the most common insult was to call someone a "fag".If after school you were playing marbles with a few friends and one of them won your best crystal boulder you called him a "fag".You and a your best friend are biking around and stop in the corner store to buy a popsicle and you shove him out of the way and dig first and score the only one that is rootbeer flavour and he gives you a punch in the arm and says "fag"....which of course meant nothing....it was just a harmless nothing meaning insult.Try that today and your instantly labelled as an intolerant homophobe who should be persecuted.

Political Correctness has just plain gone off the fucking tracks and it is a train wreck that is making our society SUCK in general.

Just my .02

Never thought I'd see the day where I'd agree (somewhat), with storm rider, but here goes - the problem is, not only are the egregious and obviously offensive names, phrases, term or images affected, but there will always be somebody offended by something.

Even if 98% of a group isn't offended, do we cater to the 2% that is, or tell them to suck it up? Now, unfortunately, people go out of their way to play victims.

Not changing the name was hurtful to some.
and there is the real issue with the politically correct BS trend

you say some, but in reality it is usually a few, mouthpieces, on most subjects

look at the Manitoba guy with the assimilate licence plate, surrounded by a frame, putting it into context, with "we are the borg" type shit

now go read Christine Blatchford on it

http://nationalpost.com/opinion/chr...sion/wcm/87a5adf2-9b3f-47b1-810a-293e7c40bdf3

just like the political correctness of trying to white-wash our history, oops, beige-washing, down east with tearing down statues, re-naming buildings

it's getting a bit stupid

like she says in the article, if that's what's getting you upset

you've got it too good

there are more important, more urgent social issues that you should really be wanting to riot about

The guy should have said his religion was Borg-ism and he was oppressed by all the non Borgs on Earth.

He'd get it back pronto.

Seriously that was a bullshit decision. Is the word "assimilate" now to be stricken from the English language?

Put into context, I have lots of Jewish friends and lots of German friends. They get along fine. And what happened to the Jews was a LOT worse than residential schools. Some Kraut killed my dad's brother. They bombed my mother's house killed her dad. But I don't begrudge this generation of Germans over the wrongs of their forefathers.

Somewhere along the line you have to leave stuff in the past. That's the whole problem in the Middle East, in the Balkans, lots of places, people bitching over shit that happened generations ago.

Where do you stop?

CBC Winnipeg is so annoying for this I no longer listen to them.

They have a bunch of cackling hens who can't even read their scripts in the morning who talk shit. Men are stupid hahahaha my husband is an idiot hahahaha men are pigs hahahaha but if someone says a bad word about a woman oh fuck it is the crime of the century. OMG misogynist!!! He can't say that on the radio!! Ban the internet!!!

Yeah, rampant double standard there. That would be a great place to get rid of taxpayer funded leeches.

Which is sad because the CBC was a great organisation years ago.

But no one was rioting. The person said something and the organisers said "ok". Generally speaking, people needn't cowtow to every suspected twinge of discomfort, but if the person being asked felt ok about it and said "sure, why not?" why is this a story? To borrow your phrase: there are more important, urgent social issues than getting worked up about two parties agreeing on something.

Even more disgusting is the Enviro crowd that insists that humanity must "save the Earth" and the 1/10th of 1 % of the whole populace of the Greater Vancouver Regional District which includes Vancouver/Burnaby/Coquitlam/New Westminster/Norht Vancouver/West Vancouver etc.Say 2000 of those unemployed zeolots show up at a rally to protest the twinning of an already existing pipeline how the fuck does that tiny marginalized cross section of society SPEAK for the rest of society.....oh thats right the rest of SOCIETY is working for a living and going to work,They dont have time to show up at protests and act like hypocrites because they have to go to work each day and pay for the mortgage/utilities/food as well as frivilous things such as a night out once in a while.
