Ok this is obviously directed at me so I will take the bait

Yes Alberta is posting better GDP numbers as it fucking should considering not only the gutting of the price of oil but also the shutdown in production due to the "BEAST" wildfire last year in Fort Mac.That wildfire would have been stopped in it's tracks had the NDP government tendered the water bomber contract and our Che Guevera worshipping Premiere had the nerve to call the Wildrose leader Brian Jean a "fear mongerer" because he pointed out this little factoid in the Legislature.

At the same time and actually much more recently the Canadian dollar has gained strength which of course will cause the NDP's budget to slip even lower into the red(or should I say orange as Orange is the new broke and you will soon find that out) so Alberta will most likely be in debt for 2 BILLION more than anticipated.

That dont mean shit though as there are still 30,000 people in downtown Calgary that dont have jobs so they dont have to worry about paying taxes for the NDP to squander on Socialist policies. If you like Socialism so much why dont you sell off your fancy Vancouver home and fuck off to Venezuella where you can live the Socialist dream of food riots and mass unemployment as well as the fun of a Socialist dictator who will soon alter the Constitution so as to remove the Opposition and replace it with his cronies.

For Albertans there is now a light at the end of the tunnel with the merger of the PC's/Wildrose.Come the next election there will not be a split of the Conservative vote nor will the NDP get the benefit of a protest vote gone wrong.

Here is a take on NDP Governance in Alberta. The Alberta Teachers Union's contract was up last year so what did the Notley NDP government do....they kicked the fucking can down the road. The contract was expired by 1 year so they offered a 5% cash bonus retroactive and for the next year when the contract is to be renewed again. The entire workforce of CNRL voluntarily took a 10% pay CUT a year ago so as to avoid lay offs but now that cant happen to the pigs at the trough in the public sector......heaven forfend those people might not be able to take 3 vacations a year....or even worse the teachers might just about run out of money as summer vacation comes to an end where they get paid for not working for 2 months.

Alberta has less than 2 years left and then we shall throw off the yoke of Socialist oppression.BC has potentially 4 years of it and it is the worst kind.A wacked out fucked up commie NDP government propped up by an even more fucked up partner in the GREEN party.Orange and Green for BC = get bent over and prepared to take it in the ass.....not for those in positions of power though.....just the tax payers. Those people that provide the government the money to frivilously squander and live life at the trough with the mantra of "Do as I say not as I do".

The tough times for Alberta happen when the NDP are kicked out and the new UCP Government has to clean up the mess. That is what happens when any Party takes the reigns after governance by the NDP.

And how do these cocksucking PC's and Liberals clean up an NDP mess? Just like they did here 16 fuckin

By Closing multitudes of Hospitals and Schools and leaving the Society to reap that whirlwind and

GDP or even RGDP is a very narrow measure of real "growth" in a society and politicians of every stripe can only really iron out a few of the economic kinks given the natural operation of the business cycle over time.

A major issue in Alberta is the tax system. A large portion of the tax base is built around resources which have wild swings. You can't fund public services that are fixed with revenues that swing all over the map. They need to change the tax system but the old boys will have none of that. You think the Skytrain sucks? Try the C train. The province needs a visionary thinker not recycling old politicians. That won't happen.

you're right, the drunk Klein's flat tax screwed up our ability to budget properly

but, we have a spending problem, have since about 2000, when the demented Klein, started phoning it in

if the PC's would have just kept the increases to inflation/population increases, Alberta would have had very small deficits during the downturn, with 40-50 oil

we spend somewhere around 2-2500/per person more than the next province, around 50% of which is public salaries/benefits

which, the NDP has ratcheted up to a even higher level

they're spending about half the deficit this yr on daily operating expenses, ie wages, bribes, wants, ideological based programs
and that is with increased revenue, they spent that too

the PC's started it, but the NDP are making it even worse

it isn't sustainable

you can't take 15% of your wage away and keep spending 120% of what you used to make

we can't afford $100,000 teachers, nurses, cops, firefighters, politicians, public sector workers

not when the other 80%, most of who make $50,000 and under are expected to pay the bills

you can't have everything

you can however live within your means, which there virtually isn't a gov't at any level in Canada doing

Look left. Way left.
I know people from Texas north. Make lotsa money when things are good. Go into debt as far as they can borrow. Attitude that it will never end.
Kept telling them to create a rainy day fund. Now they are bitching about getting their $80k truck getting repossessed and having trouble paying the mortgage.
No sympathy from me. They will be old and broke wondering why they have no social safety net.
Idiots!

They "fix" it by rolling back public sector wages by 15% and slashing the management positions.Currently there is 1 manager for every 3 employees(take into account ancillary positions to support management and that is a lot of Government bloat) and if anybody wants to complain they should be told "the only thing worse than having a job is looking for one"....in other words shut up or hit the bricks.

The Public Sector in general in Canada is vastly overpaid and under worked and face no repercussions for outright laziness/stupidity and even moreso for incompetance because they are protected by unions.Best example I can think of is when I went to the Foothills Hospital to drop off dirty laundry and pick up a load of clean laundry.I drag the stuff in and then go to the "Laundry office" area and there are 4 people doing JACK SHIT and one of them has his shoes and socks off with his feet up on the desk and he is texting on his fucking I Phone.I ask about the laundry I am supposed to pick up which should be known about and accounted for and all I get is the attitude of "It's not my job".....cant fire them though due to total negilgence as they are UNION.

As for Gordon Campbell getting pinched for a DUI and getting way scot free.....yeah well at least he paid for his own lawyer and he was not investigated and subsequently charged for bribery for accepting $10,000 in cash like Glen Clark was.Glen Clark of course got off scot free with the aid of government paid lawyers.

From your last paragraph I can only think/assume that you ARE one of the unionzed entitled government employees and you of course have the attitude of ME ME ME.You expect year over year pay hikes indexed to inflation as well that your pension which is also indexed to inflation and is a defined benefit plan be as good as gold via the taxpayer paying for it.All I can say to that is it is not sustainable and just like what happened to the city of Detroit it will happen here as the tax money will shrink and the disgustingly high wages and pensions wont happen.

A couple of private businessmen have ripped off Winnipeg taxpayers. Not for five dollars an hour. For almost $200 million (police headquarters alone), two or three hundred million over budget on the Human Rights Museum, hundred million in screwups on the new stadium.

But yeah, keep telling us how private business is so efficient and perfect.

Are you just jealous because you are not in one of those unions yourself? Everything always looks so simple from the outside.

Adam Smith advocated mixed economies did he not?

I am resentfull of how tax payers money is squandered on public servants in both the public union sector and our politicians and I mean politicians of ALL parties.I also resent how public sector workers can outright fuck the dog and wont be held accountable. One of the best examples is Canada Post employees and their bankable sick time of 18 days per year.Bank 12 days a year over 25 years =300 banked sick days and combine that with the 6 weeks of paid vacation.Final year is working 6 weeks and then going on "stress leave" for the banked sick days then working 1 week and then going on paid vacation and this was common practice until the banked sick days got terminated.

Let's be honest though. Those high salaries aren't because the government fed it's "union buddies". They're because it was what the public service had to pay to even attract employees. In a hyper inflated job market, you had to stand on your head to acquire staff or you simply didn't get any staff. There was *no* staff and the run up of salaries was what happens in a free market. You can't much pay a government worker a lousy salary versus the oil patch or private business and expect to get any type of talent to apply. What you are seeing now is a balancing of the market, but that balance comes with an ugly cost. In the private sector it means much lower salaries. In the public sector is means lower salaries and wage rollbacks.

I can understand the NDP's reticence to shutting down hospitals, etc. It took a lot of money and a lot of years to play catch up with public services. If you want a good example look no further than Calgary Transit. If Vancouver was Calgary, the Patello Bridge would be the best bridge in the city.
The Province of Alberta as well as the City of Calgary do not have a "funding problem" they both collectively have a "spending problem" and the bureaucrats for both of them are the biggest waste of tax payer monies. There are both Government/Civic Managers that make more money each fiscal year than the Premier/Mayor respectively. Most disgusting thing I have seen was when the CEO of Enmax Gary Holden got fired with just cause for accepting a bribe(which was an all expense paid trip to the Monaco Grand Prix) and he then got a 4 MILLION severance package after he was fired for taking a BRIBE.Hell the douchebag should have been tarred and feathered and ran out of town on a rail instead he got handed a golden parachute for taking a BRIBE.

Things got shitty in Alberta/Calgary when Ralph Klein got his nose out of joint over a 62% leadership review and things got shitty for Calgary when Dave Bronconier decided not to run for Mayor again.Alberta got handed the dithering shithead Ed Stelmach and then the Red Queen Redford and Calgary got Naheed Spendshi. It is a shitty lot in life but not as bad as having a former director of the Tides Foundation running the show as Mayor of Vancouver.Have fun paying more and more taxes and taxes upon top of taxes with that bastard commie running Vancouver and all the while on the take from the Tides Foundation which is a USA based special interest group interfering with Canadian politics on all 3 levels of Government....and all backed by the Rockefellers.....former owners of Standard Oil.

The Alberta economy lives and dies based on whatever is being decided by OPEC - particularly the Saudis (the Sunni gulf monachies being vassals of theirs who always vote with them). They decided to crash the oil price, on purpose, to try and bankrupt / sabotage their rivals in Iran, in Russia, in the US, etc. - basically, all those countries they figured had higher production costs and could not survive a downturn. They took a huge hit to their own bottom line, but they had massive reserves of money to sustain it for a few years. Well, about a year or so ago, they decided to throttle back the production, and let the prices begin to rise again. So make no mistake, the incomes of Alberta are not due to the Cons, nor the NDP, nor any other provincial-level organization. All they can do is react to market conditions they do not set, and maybe remember what happens to boom & bust economies based on a single non-renewable resource industry.

a large part of the alberta economy is still agriculture which keeps the province alive while oil prices are in a down cycle

personally, and not that I know anything, but what I think is the worst problem with NDP governments in the western provinces is that it drives some of the best and brightest out of the province. Even if they don't leave, their investment and business focus shifts to another jurisdiction

So, if you get a raise from the NDP in power, you are making close to minimum wage. Try the flip side for all those private companies paying these wages, who now will face a huge percentage increase in wage costs. Many will not be able to raise their prices accordingly to cover this forced increase in costs.

Which is happening in BC with unaffordable housing.

Also, taking land out of the Agricultural Land Reserve, as the BC Liberals were doing puts food security at risk.

Alberta should have been sitting pretty with their Heritage Fund, but I guess it wasn't managed well enough to gow funds during the boom years, to see them through the lean ones.

What a silly thing to say.Hell today I delivered 4 flats of boxes to a very nice bistro in downtown Calgary. It was a bugger of a delivery and I had to use a 4 wheel flatdeck to get them from my vehicle to the establishment.Got them delivered and I commented how nice the place was and how I had never been there before. The reply I got was "the boxes are for moving as our last day is Saturday because we are going out of business".The NDP minimum wage increase to $15 an hour combined with 30,000 less people downtown each day 5 days a week when they had jobs and went out for lunch cant possibly be the result of bistro's such as this going out of business could it?

The only jobs the NDP "creates" are government jobs that are given to cronies and the legislation they pass no matter which Province they are in charge of hurts the people they purport to "help" it also initiates anger towards the people that are on the lowest rung on the proverbial ladder as it wipes out the time they have put in.A specific example I will use is when the NDP in Alberta announced the $15 minimum wage.I asked a couple of gals who work at the 7-11 where I stop in each morning for a cup of coffee on the way to work. Both of them have been there for 7+ years and have gotten lousy raises over the years but are now making just over $15 an hour.I asked them how they would feel about a newly hired employee getting the same wage as them or near it after their 7+ years and they were vehemently pissed off.I asked them if they could demand a raise or even ask for one and the answer was a flat out NO.Tis a different story for the Public Sector Union workers though who will say "before minimum wage was $15 I was making $24 so now I want $27.....if the lowest of the low wage slaves get a raise as mandated by our Socialist Government I want one too"......and then of course the same Public Sector Union members want their yearly indexed to inflation raises year over year after the fact.

Back when people got treated like shit by management.Had an arm lost due to a work place accident.....or maybe got caught in a coal mine cave in etc that was the need for unions because people got fucked over. Now it is the unions that are fucking over the tax payers and holding a knife to their collective throats.

Yup. Everyone should get $5/hr and no benefits. Another twit trying to drag everyone down instead making things better. As posted by apl16

Did I say that?Did I infer that?I firmly believe you should get paid according to your effort.I have worked a lot of shitty jobs in my life time and I can guarantee I entered the workforce long before you did.I have been doing what I am doing for 20 years now and I bust my ass 12 hours a day.I have not had a "sick day" in 19 years because if I dont work I dont make money. At the same time is some fucking idiot who only remembers his own name because he wears a name tag at Walmart as a greeter be paid $15 an hour because of a Socialist agenda to drive up Union wages.....I dont fucking think so.
