The 6 to the.. Other 6
Hello guys and gals,

Just an interesting tidbit I came across. On my many, many legs of flights around our great world, I often find myself needing some intellectual stimuli. Other than books, I often find myself turn to Podcasts.

I have a rotating list of them that I access whenever I am able. Fitting to this board, I found this particular one

www.maximumfun.org/adam-ruins-every...jan-mackell-collins-how-prostitution-built-wi

Check it out if you have time!

Yes and victoria and Vancouver are prime examples of where brothels had a big impact on the community.
There are many old building town town and in residential areas that once were brothels.

After all we were a wild west coast town .living off logging mining and supplying the gold rush of the 1850s and 1890s.
And Victoria was the home of the Navy and many a whaler and lumber ship.

Even my great grand dad was a sailor that stoped her. Got married to a little church going waitress (that he got pregnant)and went up to the Klondike.
All he came back with was a husky lol.

A typical story of the making of a town .

For those people who still might be interested, but hate podcasts

Let me know what you think!
And if you need a bit of a preview to entice you:
-The ladies acted as social services and wage replacement when people got hurt
-The ladies were big movers and shakers in town, to the point where a State refused to join the "United States" unless the women are allowed to vote (which the union relented and let them join as the only State to recognize women"
-the same state also elected their first woman governor in the 20's!!
.. And much more!

I am also reading up on some other philosophical/political topics, but this is one of my current musings...

While I truly enjoy Malcolm Gladwell's work, I don't know if he's related to this (It's a bit of a joke, hope you get it). Feel free to check the sources and add your own opinion, I just found it to be super interesting. I have listened to the full podcast with the lady historian and it was very fascinating.

They also didn't shy away from the morbid reality that the madams didn't always have a lovely ending in their story...

"t is a well documented fact that the French industrial revolution was accompanied as everywhere else, by rural exodus, poverty, and an increase in the levels of urban prostitution. It is also possible to show that a proportion of French prostitutes emigrated to the US and various other destinations (even Australia) at that time (end of the 19th Century). Conversely, one can find examples of "petits femmes de Paris" having risen to a certain level of fame and wealth in the US at the time."

Spoiler alert re comments below! Stop reading now.

The podcast was interesting & full of humour. I especially enjoyed the prostitution in Utah part.

Also notable were comments re LE protection rackets, "squirrel tooth Alice", the military & a general "blackjack", the burning down of a RLD & planting 'evidence' (alcohol) there during the prohibition & the child kidnapped by Indians who became a powerful Madam.

Though no mentions of birth control or condom use, if any, although regular testing was touched upon. I assume her writings tell more.

YES! I'm glad someone else found it interesting and actually listened to the podcast. It's how I stay sane with all my time on the road/plane. I cycle through a lot of eclectic stuff but I always find his stuff to be interesting, and not overly preachy.

@Lenny. At one time my understanding is BBFS was far more common. HIV was a "gay" disease and Hep wasn't front and center like it's become in the past 15 years.
What's the deal with Hep in modern times? AFAIK hepatitis C is quite rarely transmitted sexually. Though it may be quite widespread in places where IDU is common. A & B have vaccines.

Another spoiler alert below!

The podcast mentions imported Asian or Chinese females who worked as SP's. She said something along the lines that they lived about 5 years. It seems their conditions were even worse than modern day low track sex workers in Greater Vancouver. She didn't go into what caused their early demise, though drugs, STIs & violence were mentioned earlier in the show.
