    Softwood Lumber Rant

If the US is going to charge import duties on softwood lumber, why dosen't the Cdn Government have an export tax on the softwood lumber? That way money goes into Cdn coffers rather than the US coffers. If the US needs the softwood, Canada could tax like 20% to 38 % export fee. If the US still want to put import tax on the lumber so be it. The ultimate loser here is the the American Public with a higher cost to build.

If the sells don't happen to the US; there are other markets (no raw logs- thats just bad thinking and another thread), that being said if the wood dosen't sell, it would be a good time for the lumber companies to restructure to a selective logging practices, stop clear cutting, plant more trees and Canada could have a nice sustainable industry in 40 to 50 years.

Any feedback would be nice. Not an economist, but I rather money go to Cdn coffers than US.

New export duties would be against NAFTA. Also the industry can take some countermeasures without the government help. This is want a global news article says:

“Canadian producers have started to price with that duty in mind,” Koustas said. “Already now you are seeing lumber prices up by, at one point, 20 per cent.”
With Canadian dollar so low against USD, I wouldn't worry about our exporters too much.
