It's come to my attention that the Second Cup next door is owned by a cop, and that many of his patrolling co-workers frequent the place. So maybe think twice about using the front door, and use the back door instead. ;)

probably bought the coffee shop instead of a tim hortons cause it cost at least 1mil to open a hortons franchise. 4-600k for building assets and fees, and at least 500k in CASH for operating exp, this is mandatory. dont know too many cops that are millionaires who can venture into that type of business.

where did you get this info from? i called timmies myself for franchise info, and this is what they stated. the initial fees 4-600k can be loaned, but the 500k must be unencumbered cash provided by the operator. also who ever is applying for the franchise licence must also have a net worth in excess of 500k-1mil. it is this high for a particular reason, that being they cannot afford to have any negative images from closures due to mismanagement of operating expenses. the store operator needs to be able to support high volume inventory turover and of course the payroll of 30 some odd foreigners it takes to make the one coffee. also, you do own the franchise, just they have a very tight control of how the business is run and fairly high annual fees, so it seems like you dont actually own it but you do. sure you may only take home 8-10% of the revenue, but 10% of avg 3-4mil per year aint so bad.

soory for the derail of the thread but...

It actually takes 650'000 to start up with timmies. That includes you opperating and food costs.
overhead costs are paid through day to day opperations and sales.
you also need to have a partner who already has a timmies or you must have one already
... not just anyone can open one.
and No you will never own a timmies.you lease the building/land/and the name.
thats why I'm at DQ. I OWN the store. I just pay for the name
at Timmies you will never own the store, or the land. at least thats what info was given when I started my own business.
and you'll be lucky to get the higher 2-3million mark at timmies.
I know a few opperators who do, but they are few and far between...
you have to relize there is a timmies on every corner and street, unless your in the smaller towns
and have control over each one you profits take a big hit.
and not every one is staffed by forniers, just the good ones

The TDL Group Corp. assumes all costs associated with the development of the land and building. It is not an option for a franchisee to develop the property or own the building.
