I am a bit of a movie enthusiast and these are the ones I caught recently.

Paddington: Cute, funny, heartwarming and fun for the whole family. 7/10

American Sniper: Well made, well acted, well directed, Bradley Cooper is outstanding so is Clint Eastwood, as the director. To me the movie was about post-war trauma. 8/10

Gone Girl: Nice story, mystery, entertaining and fairly well acted. I was a bit disappointed that the cat was let out of the bag too soon, but it is a good thrill nevertheless. A very unexpected ending. 7/10

John Wick: Flimsy story and non-stop action, more bullets than words in the script. Still entertaining and stylish. 6/10.

The Drop: Tom Hardy all the way..Engaging, well directed, well acted and a story well told. The style reminded me of Clint Eastwood movies. 8/10.

Birdman: One of the most intriguing movies I have seen. Michael Keaton is outstanding. The camera work done thru the narrow hallways and tight angles is taken to new heights. This is movie is so different that it seems expermental. 8.5/10.

Fox Catcher: One of the best movies I have seen recently. Steve Carrell is beyond amazing. It is eerie that this is based on a true story. Mark Ruffalo as the brother is remarkable. 8/10.

The Equalizer: The only thing worth watching in the movie is Denzel Washington. Overdone but still not boring. Not a bad movie to kills a couple of hours. 5.5/10

A Walk Among The Tombstones: Not bad, but overly stretched. Liam Neeson doesn’t look too bad as an action hero. Not a great movie, but the mystery and excution make it worth watching. 6/10

Lone Survivor: Finally caught it. Great action with very well choreographed combat scenes and that is it. Mark Wahlberg is adequate. 5/10.

Still Alice is next on the list.

Jupiter Ascending - Visually stunning, especially on a large format screen (saw this one in AVX). Unfortunately, it's an uneven mess on every other level. Too campy to take it seriously but too ernest to be enjoyed as a campy sci-fi romp. Character motivations and allegiances change from one scene to the next, then back again just as quickly. And in the year that Eddie Redmayne wins an Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in The Theory of Everything, he turns in what may be the worst performance in this movie. I mean he's laughably terrible in this and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he gets the Razzie for this next year!

Kingsman - Fucking GREAT! Wildly entertaining from beginning to end!

Seventh Son - Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore seem to be having scenery chewing fun with the material. Pacing is pretty good for the most part, although the last act seems to be forced in a little too soon. And the main character's development just kind of hits all the expected notes without ever feeling satisfying or truly complete. But the effects and creature battles are entertaining enough. This was a Tuesday special for me. Enjoyed it enough but glad I didn't pay full price :D

Edit to note: I definitely liked John Wick, The Equalizer and A Walk Among the Tombstones more than take8easy seems to have.

The Duff - a surprising funny and fresh teen comedy. Rated PG-13 here in the states, it could be rated like "15" since some of the stuff is really geared to high schools (vs jr highers). A young girl finds out she is the duff (designated ugly or fat friend) in her inner circle by her next door neighbor (the hunky jock who means well). Like Chef, it is a movie that gets social media right and how teens use it as a weapon. A good way to spend your afternoon in the theatre.

Kingsman - will be on my Top 10. If you liked Kick Ass, you will love Kingsman.

50 Shades of Grey - worst film I will paid to see this year and I paid to see The Lazarus Effect!

I also like Paddington.

Yes I saw Jupiter assending. .. it was not very engaging ..and mila kunis just did not seem to been there ..pretty face ..But nothing else

As for the movie premise. They threw every idea from every Sci Fi movie in there ... from story lines . To different types of space ships and aliens.. reminded me of dunne. And Redick...and a number of Italian Sci Fi movies from yrs passed. .
Could even throw in Star trek because of the trasporter.

And the story was just none existent because of how simplistic it was for the dominant alien race that considered them selves as God. ..more like a bunch of goofs.

"FURY" i found the be really well done. The historically accurateness of this movie was top notch.
Everything from the weapons to uniforms right down to buttons and patches were perfect.
The big one for me in this was they used a real (only known working one) German Tiger tank.
The acting in the movie was great. The fear and tension in the battle scenes really well done.

American Sniper. I want to say Great but the thing that bothered me as well as the friends I have that have been on tour over there in Afghanistan is NO ONE ever makes a Sat Phone Call to their wife in the midst of a battle. Clint Eastwood was having a geriatric moment when that went into the film.

Boyhood, excellent. I had second thoughts about it for the first 30 minutes and then really felt pulled into the film mainly because the core family were so natural and "normal". Twelve years in the making is quite remarkable IMHO.

Birdman - Woah, what a trippy film! It was like watching a movie about a play while on Mushrooms. Loved the whole movie from acting, to writing and the filming in narrow passage ways made it so realistic of an old theatre.

The Theory of Everything - pretty much what I expected but the back story showing Hawking's sense of humour was something I never anticipated. I thought dry physicist humour but no, a fun sense of humour. Quite and amazing film.

The tank battle was pretty cool but the ending was just too over the top for me. No way no how could they have survived that long.

Interesting. That incident was described in the book although they've taken it out of context in the movie. As I recall, in the book, Kyle is on the phone to his wife during a lull in a patrol and then they get engaged in an ambush. Early on in the firefight, he drops his phone but it stays connected so his wife hears the battle over the sat which was obviously pretty terrifying for her. I obviously have no idea how authentic the original incident was but it came across as quite plausible in the story.

BD
There are a few discrepancies other than the Sat Phone incident.

Google Gov Jesse Ventura + Chris Kyle. Kyle's estate has to pay Ventura damages.

Sad really since he is a hero with all his confirmed kills but Kyle did embellish a few incidents including beating up Ventura in a bar.

Birdman was truly amazing. I didn't even realize I was sitting in a theatre for two hours then the thing ended. Fantastic film.

Oh .. I thought this thread was dead. I guess not.

Since the posting, I caught Whiplash and Nightcrawler!

Whiplash: Talk about a tense, well acted drama. J.K.Simmons is on another level. I hated him within two minutes of him coming on the screen. Miles Teller as the young man was equally good, he is in every scene toe to toe with Simmons character. One thing I am a bit upset about and intrigued by was the Oscar nomination. J K Simmons won it for Supporting actor. To me he was THE LEAD. I had this debate with a few more people too. Anyways, an awesome movie and oh yea.. the music was good. The drums kept playing in my head for days. 8/10

Nightcrawler: Loved it. Jake Gylenhall is outstanding. He seemed to be living that role to make it very convincing. A dark movie with bit of satire on modern day media. It is thrilling, dark and lots of fun to watch. 8/10

Thanks for the tip! I love jazz and rented Whiplash. Acting, story and music are all :thumb:

It Follows: It's a low budget indie film that is being tooted as a horror film but it is more of a chillingly creeping film if that makes sense. Basic storyline is a girl has sex with a guy only to find out the guy 'passing on' a curse. The curse is that the girl will now be followed by 'it', a ghost of sort that is ever changing itself appears. Along with her friends, they try to figure out a solution before she is killed. This film harkens back to films like Halloween, Phantasm and The Blair Witch Project. I loved it but you have to be patient because the movie does not take off still halfway through it.

"Interstellar": A Pretty good Sci-Fi\Adventure film with a lot of plot contortions due to time travel through a wormhole and a nice tidy ending setting up the sequel. Lots of recognizable actors, good spfx, decent story, good acting. 8/10

"Foxcatcher" : A movie based on the the actual events around John E DuPont and his wrestling team during the 80s. Steve Carrall is outstanding, as is the rest of the cast, the sets and props are fantastic.

I want to hear from anyone who has seen "the Duke of Burgundy" ; I hear it's sizzling, WAy better than 50 shades............

if anyone is remotely interested in cycling culture or want to understand what passion is,
I highly recommend seeing Marinoni: The Fire in the Frame.
