Hello, everyone. For the past couple of days I thought about starting a movie reviews thread, i don’t know how much interest it would get/participation. Looking forward to others posting their reviews/comments (about trailers, casting, upcoming flicks, etc.).

Skyfall

Pros: Good chase scene in the beginning. Daniel Craig still got it. Javier Bardem makes an interesting villain.

Cons: More time with Bardem’s character would have added to it. Some minor plot holes.

Final Thoughts: Pretty decent movie that got a bit over hyped in the press. Don’t know if Craig should be doing it anymore, getting a bit old for the part. Michael Fassbender would make an interesting Bond.

Rating: 7.25 out of 10

Goon

Pros: Had some pretty decent laughs. Liev Schreiber has some humorous/compelling moments.

Cons: Again Hollywood feels the need to sandwich a love story into the plot, when it’s not necessary. Needed more comedy.

Final Thoughts: Could have been better if they spent more time on the other hockey players. The Russians were funny. It ain’t no Slap Shot.

Rating: 6.25 out of 10

* Sorry, i haven't seen any newer movies lately. Also the number of films watched has taken a drop recently, I'll try to watch more soon.

Goon I enjoyed the first time, and after a few repeat viewings, I dare say it's almost on the same level as Slap Shot.

I suspect that Daniel Craig was meant to look a bit burnt out in the movie. I would like to see him in another one.

Broken Trail.

A true story and a western. About two cowboys and six prostitutes and love.

Daniel Craig is good in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and even better in "Layer cake" Probably because Sienna Miller is in it too and she is the Hot Brit babe in my brain at the moment.

Daniel is a good recent replacement for the older Bonds. He can do the stunts and has more of an edge to his character.

I haven't seen "Goon". Was it even in the theatre?

Fassbender, well since I saw him in "Shame" and a few other films like a "Dangerous Method"; I don't see him playing
Bond.He doesn't have that kick ass attitude IMHO.

Thanks to Telus screwing up royally with my cable, I was able to strong arm a year's free worth of movie central channels (amongst others) so I have been able to watch several recent releases, as well as see some other movies. Here are a few notables

50/50: Wonderfully acted, especially by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anna Kendrick. Thought it would be funnier, but was actually a bit of a tear-jerker. I still enjoyed it though 8.5/10

Bridesmaids: It was basically the Hangover for Chicks but still effing hilarious!!!! The whole plane sequence was a laugh riot, great performances all-round 8.5/10.

Sucker Punch: I enjoyed this movie because it was like a video game come to life. The joke I said to everyone was this movie was difficult to watch over the sound of my giant throbbing erection!!! :p Hot scantily-clad chicks, kicking ass with some pretty great action sequences, what's not to like? Plus, unlike most movies nowadays, it was an original screenplay 8/10.

Girl 6: A Spike Lee joint starring Theresa Randle as an out of work actress who becomes obsessed with her job as a phone sex operator. Randle is good in it but the story unravels at the end which took away from the rest of the story. Plus I always take Spike Lee films with a grain of salt because at some point he always tries to blame whitey for something 6.5/10

The Hangover 2: TERRIBLE TERRIBLE movie. I know sequels are rarely as good or better than the original, but this movie was pure barf. Unlike, the first one, which was this hilarious comedy of errors, this one was sad and painful to watch. I actually felt sorry for them more than anything. Couldn't even make it all the way through 2/10.

If I recall correctly, I believe it did have a theatrical release. I'd have to say that I think I liked it more than agentman did but probably not quite as much as blazejowski seems to have. I'd say that it's worth a viewing.

I noticed in another thread that you mention having netflix. I recommend checking out Centurion. I don't know if it will change your mind about Fassbender as the next Bond but it should let you see him in another genre.

Fassbender is fucking great in X-men
Agreed. He was excellent in that (no X-Men pun intended). I believe that X-Men: First Class is also still available on netflix.

Silver Lining Playbook would be a terrific movie but they screwed it up with so much cussing. Seems really like they tried too hard to make the actors look tough when it was just enough f this and f that.

Ah, you are right MM. I have seen Centurion and that was a good Movie. After all the Spartacus TV shows I was sort of "oh well, let's check this one out too". I was pleasantly surprised.

I think the next Bond should be Jeremy Renner.

Anna Kendrick was brilliant in 50/50 and seems to just get hotter and hotter

A movie that I didnt expect great things from but is one of my favorites of the year is "End of Watch" starring Jake Gyllenhaal

A few more movies I've seen over the last few months

Guess Who IS Coming To Dinner?: And I 'm not talking about the one with Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac. The original with Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier. This is just a wonderful movie for so many reasons. A great script, wonderful performances all around, and it examined racism and prejudice from both sides, not assigning blame to neither. A true classic in every sense of the word. A great movie for Spencer Tracy to go out on 9/10.

Johnny Belinda: What can I say, I love TCM :p For some reason I felt strangely compelled to PVR this movie and i was pretty glad I did. It takes place in Cape Breton where a doctor befriends a deaf girl who works at the mill. He teaches her sign language and how to read lips. But one night the town hot rod, a cod fisherman (remember ,t his is Nova Scotia 1948), gets drunk and rapes her and gets her pregnant. A scandal ensues, as everybody thinks it's the doctor. The tale soon turns to revelation and murder. Jane Wyman stars as the deaf girl, Belinda, and she won an Oscar for her efforts. It was pretty ground-breaking stuff for that time to portray deaf people as anything but charity cases, although the performance itself isn't SUPER spectacular IMO. Still a unique, off the board kind of pick that told a good solid story 8/10.

The Girl: This is an HBO movie about the relationship between Tippi Hedren and Alfred Hitchcock. Sienna Miller plays the former and Toby Jones the latter. I'm not crazy about models who try to be actors because I think few make a smooth transition, although Sienna Miller did a fine job in the role. To be honest, They make Alfred Hitchcock looks like a letch, which he may well have been, and made him look like a villain. The script itself is good, not great , but it was still watchable. in the end, the were both their undoing 6.5/10.

Silver Linings Playbook – could have used more humor, a bit contrived , should have trimmed 10 mins. , good performances. It got a lot of praise, I don’t know why. 6.8/10

Shaft – I enjoyed it as an early 70’s time capsule; they should do another reboot with Idris Elba 7/10

The Bourne Legacy – it drags in certain parts, never felt connect to the main character compared to previous movies and lacked tension as well. 6.2/10

The Devil’s Rejects – never saw the previous installment. Some tense/creepy scenes, kinda funny that the lead actress looked like a model compared to her rough, dirty and deformed looking relatives. 6.8/10

Curandero – a horror thriller written by Robert Rodriguez. Some decent visuals but other than that not much in terms of scares. 5/10

Top 3 movies I have seen in the last year:

1. Flight - Denzel Washington 7.5/10
2. Argo - Ben Afleck 7/10
3. The Place Beyond the Pines 7.75/10

All other movies are not even worth seeing... Lincoln was brutal. So BORING!!! Just a bunch of yelling!! PASS

Zero Dark Thirty is overrated...I would give it 6.5/10

django unchained was good - but only if you look at it from the point of view of current white house political commentary and current events social commentary

all star casting was good, the story moved right along, screenplay was excellent (although i thought the camera could have lingered a bit longer on kerry washington's lovely body when they were dragging her naked out of 'the pit')

pretty good historically, but the tarantino effect was definitely there - and was not accurate at all... i mean cap and ball pistols just didn't have THAT kind of power to do what was depicted during the shootouts

overall, a good solid 8/10

avoid it if you don't like graphic violence, the 'n' word, or westerns
