more info here: http://www.spca.bc.ca/welfare/campaign-issues/puppy-mills.htmlWhen deciding to add a furry new member to your family, it's important to do your homework.
Your choice may affect the lives of thousands of animals. If you purchase a puppy or kitten from a pet store, over the Internet or through a newspaper classified ad, you could be perpetuating animal cruelty. Puppy and kitten mills sell to pet stores -- reputable breeders don't.
The BC SPCA rescues hundreds of animals each year from puppy mills across B.C. These animals are found in horrible condition, locked in small cages with no access to the outdoors. Puppy mill owners are only concerned with making a profit - they do not care about the welfare of the animals or how many lives their business will affect.
The Cruelty Investigations department of the BC SPCA works tirelessly to close puppy mills, and to help the hundreds of neglected animals born each year.
Your choice will make a difference.
The BC SPCA has created several resources to help you make the right decision when choosing a new family member.
Information sheets about puppy mills, making the BC SPCA your first adoption option, finding a reputable breeder and a story about one woman's heartbreaking lesson are available.
I know a little about alot of breads.
Being Japanese has bugger all to do with why you should get a particular breed of dog. If that is one of the reasons you are using to get an Akita, all the more reason why you should not. That is the kind of reasoning that makes all sorts of problems with dogs and dog owners. Also i am Japanese.
I figured just opinion....just wanted to clarify. I also would chose a Mastiff or Rotty or a number of other dogs before an Akita. Pretty familiar with the breed (Japanese Akitas, not so familiar with American, or the differences) and there were definitely some agro issues that were unwanted. I've only ever met one group (all same owner, extremely well trained) that didn't seem to have any issues...as you mentioned or with killing neighbours pets etc etc.Just my opinion. I like short haired dogs with brindle coats. The Akita I encountered was very protective of my friends child and nearly tore apart 2 different people, both women. I'm very experienced with dogs and own 2 140lb mastiffs, and a APBT myself, who tippy toe around children, but I personally never felt comfortable around this dog. And yes I know all are different but others I've met have a strangeness about them. Again just my opinion.
Specially because most of the Akita's here are American Akita's, not Japanese...yes the breed began in Japan...but really, silly reason for getting a dog. Maybe you'd be better suited to a Shiba.WTF? I mean really...
