International Sex Workers’ Rights Day – March 3rd, 2010

Every year on March 3rd sex workers, sex worker organizations and their allies
gather across the globe to recognize the International Sex Workers’ Rights Day. This
day, created in 2001 in India, demonstrates the resilience of sex workers and their
determination to improve their basic human rights.

The Shift program would like Calgary to recognize International Sex Workers’
Rights Day, and bring together a group of people who also believe that all workers,
regardless of the work they do, have the right to safe work environments, and
access to supports and services.

The Shift program is unique and recognizes that sex work occurs on a continuum,
and that for many people sex work is work. We use the term sex work and sex
worker as an umbrella term for any person involved in the sex trade industry. Like
any work, there are positives and negatives, benefits and short-comings; and, like
any other work, workers have the right to be safe. By utilizing a harm reduction and
rights based approach, the shift program assists adults, in the sex trade, to improve
quality of life and reach individual goals.

If you would like to be a part of the planning committee and help organize our event
for International Sex Workers’ Rights Day, our first meeting will be on Wednesday
December 9th, at 6:00pm. Light snacks will be provided.

We ask that you bring your thoughts and ideas, are able to commit to three or four
meetings before the event, as well as attend the event.

Please contact the Shift program coordinator, Hazel Orpen, if you are interested in
taking part or for more information, at 403-237-8171 or [email protected]
