Hi HN,

I joined the forum just to speak to you. Your info is famous on the internet!

I met with a MPA last Friday and had a great session ending with a BBBJ. She and I have known each other for years and I am comfortable with her due to her cleanliness.

Anyway, my SO and I had sex on Sat and starting monday I started experiencing a red, swollen foreskin (I'm not circumcised), raised red rash on the left side of my penis head and a wet appearance when I roll back the foreskin. There's no pain, no flakiness, no smell.

I had something like this but milder in my youth and my MD had diagnosed it as a yeast infection and Rx'd a cream for me that cleared it up in 2-3 days. I picked up some Monistat cream 2 days ago and so far it looks about the same.

I also checked with my SO and she reports no symptoms.

HELP! I'm freaking out that I might have picked up some sort of STD.

Thanks for the posts people (and the PM I got from a fellow member).

I did in fact head over to the MD yesterday (and things did start to look better from Sat onwards). He took a swab of the little guy and took a look. He says its highly unlikely to be an STD and says it looks like yeast. He recommended Polysporin cream as a good OTC medicament and since yesterday things have virtually returned to normal.

Thanks everyone.

On a side note I think I might have been scared off of the FS hobby for a while. :(

Hi poole

Sorry about the delay in getting to your questions.

It is hard to diagnose conditions over the internet as we would need to see it as well as do some tests. What I can do is give you some suggestions on what to do next.

From what you have described it sounds like you have an infection on your foreskin and head of your penis. They call this balanitis. Yeast is a common cause of balanitis. Yeast infections are also more common in men who are not circumcised and currently they don’t believe that it is sexually transmitted.

It is great that you went to the doctor as there can be a few causes of balanitis. It is much easier for health professionals to diagnose conditions when you are still having symptoms.

I am interested in what the doctor recommended as treatment given that they said it looked like a yeast infection. Polysporin is a topical antibiotic (for bacteria), for yeast infections we generally recommend clotrimazol (canestan) or miconazole (monistat). We advise that people apply one of these creams twice daily for 2 weeks. You should keep applying the cream for the full amount of time that was recommended by your health care person, even if the yeast infection starts to get better.

From what you have written it looks like you are really concerned about getting a sexually transmitted infection (STI). As most STI do not show symptoms it is hard to know if you or someone else may have one. From the sex that you described it would be possible for an infection like gonorrhea, herpes, chlamydia or syphilis to be transmitted.

Everyone has a different level of risk tolerance in regard to the types of sex they are comfortable with. From my experience at the clinic men with steady partners can be one of the people most concerned about STI. I can understand this because there is a good chance that if you contract an STI that your steady partner will have to get treatment as well (provided you are having sex with them). This can cause some problems in the relationship. If this is a concern for men you can always reduce your risk by having different types of sex e.g. hand job, blow job with a condom etc…

Poole in your situation I would just suggest going for an STI check up. You could get this at your doctor or if you feel more comfortable you could get this done at an STI clinic.

Here is a link to information on what tests are offered and how long you need to wait before going for testing.

HN - you mention YIs are more common in intact men. What I've read is that intact men tend to show symptoms more often, but they get them about the same amount. It's just that cut men are more often asymptomatic and end up passing on the infections to their female partners without realising they have it. What do you make of that?

Hi Missy Mariposa

Thanks for the articles. There is a great deal of information out there about yeast. I find this confusing at times as much of the information is different.

I also found a research paper that showed that 22% of circumcised men had at least one type of yeast on the head of their penis (the glans). What this shows us is that yeast can be part of the normal flora that is on the head of the penis and is probably similar for circumcised and uncircumcised men.

Normally this yeast is kept in check by the other flora that is on the skin. Sometimes this other flora changes and this allows the yeast to overgrow and cause a yeast infection.

As yeast is normally on the body we only call it a yeast infection when the yeast has overgrown and starts to show symptoms e.g. Swollen foreskin, red and itchy skin etc...

The reason I think uncircumcised men can get yeast infections (the symptoms) more is because the foreskin allows for a warm moist area around the head of the penis which is a good environment for the yeast to overgrow.

Currently they think yeast is not sexually transmitted. The reason they give for this is because yeast can be present on so many people and is not a problem. They think you need the right environment for the yeast to overgrow in the first place. But even us will advise both sex partners to treat their yeast infections on some occasions.

I have seen men over the years who have gotten yeast infections after a BBBJ. I have always wondered if it could be from the washing product used after the BBBJ or maybe the flora in the mouth changes the flora on the head of the penis.

Which type of Monistat do I buy for a male yeast infection? I've been the store and there are like 4-5 different types.

I've had a yeast infection once before and the Dr told me if it happens again to buy Monistat because that's what he presribed me to get rid of it.

I also know there's some sort of ingredient that starts with an "m" that gets rid of it, but which type do I get? Do I get Monistat 7? Or the 3? Or the 5 or whatever? There are so many kinds.

Hi wannabep00ner

It can be confusing going to the pharmacy as there are so many products for yeast infections. Most of the products have been developed for vaginal yeast infections as they are more common. For male yeast infections you can use Clotrimazole (Canesten is a brand name that uses this ingredient) or Miconazole (Monistat is a brand name that uses this ingredient). Just get the topical cream and follow the directions.

If you have any questions about what product to use just ask the pharmacy staff, they are usually very helpful. I know it can embarrassing asking someone face to face about these matters when you have no privacy. If this is a problem just call the pharmacy you plan to visit and ask all your questions over the phone. They should be able to recommend a product and you can just go in and pick it up.
