Hello HN,

For those of us who are more paranoid than others about swapping bodily fluids, could you enlighten me on potential risks when using dental dams? My assumption would be a very low risk if used correctly, but I've been known to be wrong (just once ;) ) before....

Thanks,
GC

Hi Gentleman Caller

I would not see any risk. As long as your mouth is just making contact with the latex and you are not coming in contact with any vaginal fluids.

Both stores have online shopping and will ship to other places in Canada. They both sell dental dams.

Not too far
Food plastic wrap/plastic film

I've seen an SP who used to take a fairly large piece of plastic film, tuck it on one side under her butt and hold it with a hand on her belly on the other side.

Seemed to work pretty well and it's very inexpensive.

The downside is obviously the total lack of taste :p

Hi addicted2lov

You brought up a good point about plastic film (plastic wrap, Saran Wrap) that I forgot to mention. It has been suggested for many years that non-microwaveable plastic film would offer good protection, is easier to find and cheaper.

I have cut and pasted a section from the sexualityandU.ca website were they discuss the use of plastic wrap.

“Some people also use non-microwaveable plastic wrap (Saran Wrap®) as dental dams. This has not been studied in depth yet, but there is evidence that non-microwaveable plastic wrap can stop virus-sized particles, which could mean it can prevent STIs. Until this has been studied in more detail, sticking with latex dams or condoms (or even a cut-open latex glove) is probably your safest bet. However, plastic wrap is certainly better than nothing, as it does provide at least some level of protection against STIs.”

Here is the link to the full article. They have diagrams on how to make a dental dam out of a condom.

I like the last bit of advice they give.

“Have fun, experiment with different types of dams and condoms, and find out what you like best!”

The sexualityandU.ca website is administered by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. I have met some of the people who run the site and they certainly strive to provide the most up to date information.
