Hi all

I received a PM from someone with a link to an interesting article about condoms and I thought it would be a good thing to share with the board.

The article they sent was the “Prevalence of condom use errors among STD clinic patients” published in the American Journal of Health Behavior.

The main points from the article are that a substantial proportion of people who were sexually experienced used condoms incorrectly. Common mistakes they saw were people who did not use condoms at the beginning of sex but rather put it on towards the end. Not pinching the top of the condom when rolling it on. Putting the condom on the wrong way and then flipping it over and using it.

I also found another article on condoms called “The effectiveness of latex condoms for prevention of STI/HIV” in The Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality.

Here is a link.
http://www.sieccan.org/pdf/McKay_CJHS2007_Condom Effectiveness.pdf

Some main points from their article is that “condoms remain the best proven currently available means to reduce the risk for STDs”

The first way they have done this is by testing the latex condom in the laboratory to see if it will provide a barrier against particles the size of STI/HIV bacteria and virus’s. Through various experiments they have found that latex condoms provide an excellent barrier to HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus, herpes simplex virus (HSV) and the human papillomavirus (HPV).

The next way they tested condoms was to see how well they worked in real life. One study looking at HIV had 256 HIV infected men and woman and their heterosexual HIV negative partners. During the study 124 of the couples used condoms consistently, engaging in safer sex approximately 15,000 times and among these consistent condom using couples, no one became infected with HIV. Due to the skin to skin transmission of HSV and HPV they found that consistent condom use has a substantial, but not absolute protective effect.

This shows that condoms are really effective but only if they are used correctly.

This brings up another interesting topic. What is the best way to learn correct condom usage? Do people want a written step by step guide, a video etc… any suggestions would be appreciated.

Let us know if you want us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.
