I asked some of the girls and then it dawned on me to see what the official word on the topic is.

How can we SPs ensure our toys are safe for healthy use with each client? Condoms on the toys obviously but what about cleaning? Alcohol? Is this enough to keep sti viruses at bay and non-transferable?

Hi Katlyn

I have been in contact with a lady who specializes in this area and hopefully in the next few weeks we will post some information about this.

There are a few different types of products out there and they need to be cleaned in different ways.

Thank you that would be wonderful and definitely helpful I think for everyone. Currently I just use disposable cock rings and have only used vibrators on myself, etc but I have some fantastic couples toys I would like to be able to use with clients and have as yet not because I don't know how to clean them in a way that acceptably reduces sti transmission risks.

The following is a list of toy materials that are commonly found. Also included is the basic caring instructions for the toys and additional tips.

Latex toys
- Some people have allergies to this product, avoid if that is the case
- Porous (able to absorb fluids), will absorb bacteria over time
- To clean, soap and water
- Compatible with silicone and water based lubes

Silicone
- Hypo allergenic, ideal for people with latex allergies
- Non-porous
- To clean, soap and water
- In the case of non-vibrating silicone toys, they can be boiled
- Use silicone anal toys
- Water base lube ONLY

Pyrex Glass
- Hard and unforgiving
- Only toy that can be sterilized
- Dishwasher safe
- Compatible with silicone and water based lubes
- Can be used between partners so long as it is sterilized
- If pyrex glass becomes chipped or cracked throw it out immediately

Hard Plastic
- Mildly porous
- Compatible with Silicone and water based lubricants
- To clean, soap and water

Cyberskin and UR3
- A silicone and PVC combination
- Highly porous, will absorb lubricants and bacteria
- DO NOT share this product
- To clean, mild soap and water
- To keep it soft, rub powdered corn starch on it

Toy Care
- To clean, use a mild soap that your body is familiar with
- Never submerge a toy, even if it says waterproof
- Use a damp facecloth if you’re worried about getting water in the
battery casing
- Don’t use a toy cleaner or alcohol to clean
- Store toys separately, like in individual ziplock bags

Boiling Pyrex and Silicone
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and carefully place the toy in the water. Boil for five to seven minutes, then remove
- Sterilize each toy separately
- Let air dry and cool away from heat
- Do not leave unattended, toys could melt

Lubricants
- Waterbased lubricants are compatible with all toys
- Silicone lubricant will cause silicone toys to break down
- Do not use baby oil, oils, or jellies, as they will cause condoms and toys to break down

Tips for Sex Workers
- When using toys with clients, always use condoms, even on the glass toys
- If possible, use only silicone toys, as it will limit the amount of bacteria that could possibly be transferred
- Do not take cyberskin with you, as it is highly porous and would put one at a higher risk
- Hard plastic is relatively cheap, as is latex, and can be disposed easily
- For anal toys, use silicone and a condom. If the client would like a toy used on them, have them reimburse the cost of the toy and use it only with them, and still condomize it.
- If you can’t clean the toy immediately following, do it as soon as possible.
- Never, ever, share an uncondomized toy
- Do not go from anal to vaginal or anal to oral with a toy. If you use a toy anally, do not use in any other orifice (hole).

To the right
Thank you Health Nurse, that is excellent information.

And good news! I was a little worried that if soap and water wasn't good enough for the toys I'd have to find a better method for my own. :)
