I'm considering switching from a PC to a MAC. ( Currently have a Dell ). Would appreciate any info about any unknown or unpublicized problems when converting files from a PC to a MAC. Is it really that easy to move my files and get up and running ? Don't profess to be techno savvy.
Thanks

I have both myself. 2 each including at works. Mac is great for ipod and pictures, but tend to have more problems than PC. If you switch to Mac, I strongly recommend to get warranty.

I am a Mac girl all the way.
I might be wrong, but I think Mac comes with the ability to do some kind of plug n' transfer function. There certainly is from an old Mac system/computer to new Mac system/computer. But when my mom made the switch (from PC to Mac) I'm pretty sure she transferred her old files with ease...and believe me, she is far from computer literate.
Hope I'm not having false memory system but I'd go for it. I love my MacBook.
Kisses,
kelli

Who needs a PC?

Just to prove a point, I'm posting this using my MacBook, running Windows XP through Bootcamp with Firewfox. And I'm not even a geek.

I'm a Mac user from waaaay back. I bought Windows XP because I wanted to see why people with PCs defend them so much. I've used Windows for about 10 hours now and I'll be damned if I can figure out why anyone would prefer a PC over a Mac.

The gay test?

Please dude. Mac OS X, while girly, is built on BSD UNIX, arguably the most secure and best NOS that has ever existed. It's history stomps on "Linux" and comparing it to Windows is laughable.

And all that aside, the fact is, the Mac guy is most likely to get laid. The Dell dude is at home gaming.

ya true enough... i just found these images a while ago and got a kick out of them......

apples and oranges in my opinion...

Odd place for a Mac / PC discussion.

I am an IT architect for one of the companies mentioned above and answer this when asked by my friends. Apple designs their products for the consumer whereas PC is focussed at business. If all you are going to do is surf, email and maybe work with one of the standard applications then Mac is a great chioce. If you need to customize, connect to a business network or are concerned with security then a PC should be considered. Yes, I did say security as MAC is secure only through it's obscurity. You Mac users please backup your files if you are not running anti-virus!

I always have been and always will be a PC guy.

I tried a Mac a couple of years ago and found the platform wasn't optimal for me in my line of work, but I must say the file transfer was easy at the time and fairly stress free.

That's because ur brand new mac is a PC. all new mac's are running on intel core 2 duo processors because the old cpu's they used to use the G3's , G4's , G5's just too damn slow compared to PC.

Mac's are for the below average user, the casual user that need only to browse a website, do word processing and listen to their music. something that can be done very fast and efficiently with PC hardware that is 8yrs old and i'm not kidding either. there are new computers made especially for that now called netbooks. Asus EEE PC is a perfect example just as that picture with the tricycle and motorcycle picture above.

PC's are for gamers and anyone that needs bleeding edge technology to do everything else that a Mac cant do. and adobe software are not games.
Video Games are what actually drive PC hardware to go faster and are used to benchmark PC hardware.

if the whole world came to an apocalyptic end and all that was left standing was a super computer with all the information and technology needed to rebuild civilization. The only thing required was to build a PC, install the windows xp home and run a simple program in the command prompt and press enter and the whole world would rebuild itself. civilization dumbed itself down because everyone started using mac's and demanded things to be easier and easier to the point where they were as smart as all the people in Idiocracy. The human race would come to a screeching halt.

I am Mac user and have never thought of myself as "below average user". Considering most design, sound and film post production is done on Macs, below average seems a bit of an odd descriptor.

As for the original post what kind of files are you speaking about? Most programs that can be found on a PC can be found on a Mac and no "conversion" is necessary.

If you looking to transfer your files from you old PC to your new Mac its no different then swapping files for PC to PC.

Macs now offer the best of both worlds as you get the stability and user friendliness of a Mac, while still being able to have Windows through boot camp.

I'd also be curious to how Apple's free file transfer for your old pc to your new Mac service works. As its free of charge when you purchase from an Apple Retail Store.

D.A., I have the usual files of a casual user, Excel, Work, photos, music. If I make the switch I just wanted to be comfortable the all my files on my PC will be transferred and that the directories will be the same on the Mac as my PC. I also have all my business email address' and contacts on my PC.

I've used a pc for many years. Occasionally I've used macs at university, but not privately, and mainly for graphics work.

But a couple months ago I bought myself a mac notebook and I still haven't figured it out. Years ago, I learned how to use a pc by fiddling with it and whenever I have problems I can figure them out just fiddling some more with the pc. But I can't even begin to figure out how to fiddle with a mac.

I'm really thinking I'll have to take a course just to learn how to use this blamed thing.

One thing I'd heard about a mac was that it didn't have all these security risks. But for the past few weeks I have had troubles opening my email because it gets stuck in a redirect loop. The only way to resolve this (that I know) is to clear my cookies (for Firefox anyway, on Safari the redirect loop has permanently blocked me from opening my email). And then I don't have any of the advantages that you get with cookies.

Meanwhile on my pc I have none of these problems.

I also note that since getting the mac, my email keeps getting unsolicited spam for viagra, whereas before I had the mac, when I just used the pc my email wasn't getting any spam.

And there all the other bothers with macs. I have to keep correcting what I type because the keys are too close together for my fingers (maybe if I was a hunt and pecker I wouldn't have that problem). Nor do I find the screen resolution all that great. And the screen icon displays are just silly.

Honestly I see no advantage to the mac. About the only thing it's good for is graphics and I've yet to figure out how to properly use the graphics on my mac.

maybe below average is stretching it a bit far. but word, web browsing, itunes, and photoshop sum up the bulk of the MAC using community.

the niche market folks that are "designing with Illustrator, Flash and Photoshop" are using a MAC because its what they were told to use. they ask around and people will tell them " Mac's are better for graphics " which is both a truth and a myth because both mac's and pc's have the same programs. The next part of so called graphics is color output of the users monitor. because others are using mac's lets assume all mac screens are built exactly to the same specs and every picture looks that same across all Apple monitors. for PC users because there are so many options and different brands to choose from not all monitors are created equal especially now with LCD's this point is fact.
Now when it comes to 3D and more intensive design work look at the Autodesk line of products which soon will come to a MAC have been done on PC's for a very long time.

so why do people use mac's for sound? the majority of mac users for sound design purposes ie, unsigned talent, singers, bands etc use Mac's because of some of the programs available on a mac that are extremely cheap and extremely easy to use. i mean easy like you run and off you go easy. because they are artists not computer geeks. and they dont wanna blow a whole bunch of money to learn how to use programs like Pro Tools, which is both on mac and pc.

people that have problems keeping PC's secure, virus, spyware, spam free and need to contact tech support are the ones who need to go out and buy a mac because they simply just dont know how to keep them secure or dont want to pay someone to let them know. they go and grab a mac because they hope because so few people use mac's that they wont have any problems.

Bottom line. when you compare the hardware and the cost of performance Mac's will never have the same performance as a PC. dont beleive me ? dual boot any intel core 2 duo power mac with windows xp or vista. run a few benchmarks. the mac isnt going to come close.

I will admit I'm a hardcore Pc user. I've used MAC's before back in the G4 and G5 days while i was in college learning graphic stuff. I hated the stupid mouse it came with which was clearly designed for looks and not function. and compared to the cheap PC i had built at home the mac was pissing me off with how slow it was compared to my cheap lil PC. cheap because i built it myself and selected only mid-level components being a student on a budget.
