I keep reading stuff online and just can't find much in the way of information on transmission rates for these two in classic, protected sex, or incidence in sp's in Vancouver.

Also, just a little curious, clearly people are concerned about disease, but there's really little talk on the boards about prevalence or actual occurrence. Sort of makes one wonder about the actual rates of infection/incidence among sp's and clients. Out of curiousity, are there any stats available on prevalence rates in the general population in Vancouver?

Hi rezzie7

It is really hard to know the exact numbers as it is not a reportable infection (we do not keep accurate numbers of people who test positive). The other thing is that most people do not get recognizable symptoms for the herpes simplex virus (HSV) or human papilloma virus (HPV) and since we do not have a screening test for everyone it is hard to know.

What I can give you is some numbers that have been generated from studies that been done in Canada.

Herpes

Health Canada estimates that worldwide:
• 50% - 90% of adults have HSV type 1
• 20% - 30% of adults have HSV type 2

Dr Stephen Sacks studied 409 randomly chosen women in labour in a Vancouver hospital from May, 1985 and January, 1987. The study showed that there is an increased risk of having HSV type 2 as your number of partners increased. For example, 4.6 % of woman who had one lifetime partner had HSV type 2 and 55% of the woman who had over 10 partners had HSV type 2.

In BC in 1999, they tested the blood of pregnant woman and found that 17.3% of them had HSV type 2. This ranged from 7.1% in woman 15-19 years old to 28.2% in those 40-44 years.

A study carried out in an Alberta STI clinic (1994-1995) showed that 56% of people had antibodies to HSV type 1 and 19% had antibodies to type 2.

Most of the data for HSV type 2 has been carried out in woman. The reason for this is that it can be easy to study woman who are pregnant as they are going for regular blood tests.

HPV

Canadian studies have shown that approx 70% of the adult population will have at least one genital HPV infection over their lifetime.

That's really good information, thank you for posting that. This and other epidemiological information would really be helpful as a sticky on this site. A sort of general estimated infection totals and rates of transmission.
