Oh God. Even powerhouse countries like Zimbabwe and Viet Nam have more medals than us.

I've been using the Official Beijing Olympics site

I too am amazed at our results thus far. I know that we typically excel in winter sports but come on this is ridiculous.

your mom says hi.
all those governments, believe it or not even of the countries you have never heard of heavily subsidize their athletes. a lot of them are given everything they need on a silver platter.

mean while canadian athletes get sweet shit and often times hold down part time jobs at places like mcdonalds of all places.

is it any wonder????

Who cares how much they subsidize their athletes.

It's funding for their scientists and pharmacologists that counts.

Those with the best masking drugs = the most medals

Call me a cynic, but I gave up on the Olympics being true sport a long time ago.

I think they should just throw the doors wide open, let 'em use whatever they want. At least then, there's no bullshit.

WE SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for one thing you should say "i suck." not "we suck." at least they are competing. plus they are doing it drug free and without all the help and hand outs other athletes from other nations get.

if more medals is important to you then show support a little more then once every four years.

these athletes work part time or full time jobs and or go to school in some cases and spend most any spare time they have training for their sport with next to no support from the the government and even less from people like you that say "we suck".

i'm sorry to be so harsh with you but i think there are a lot of people out there that need a reality check with this topic.

When you look at the population of competing countries compared to ours and how many of these countries groom and financially support their athletes since they can basically walk, what chance do Canadians really have to compete? Sports are little more than a hobby for most Canadians.

The same applies to the American athletes.

you have got to be kidding me??????

they get waaaaaaaaaaaay more funding then canadian athletes get and they also have a population of 300 000 000 to pull talent from whereas we have 32 000 000 to pull talent from.

also i'll say this, i don't admire much about americans but one thing i do admire is they support amateur sport. go to a high school wrestling match in canada and go to a similar match up of high school wrestling in the states.

no comparison period.

i'm not going to sit here and read and hear on the radio today about how embarrassing it is for out athletes to have won no medals when for the next four years after the games are done no one will give a shit and support them zero.

then also listen to people bitch about how they don't want their tax dollars to go towards sport and this and that but bitch about medals.

MY point was that it wasnt gov't supported like a lot of other countries like Australia and china for example.

Having said that, the argument that its a population to draw talent from is baseless on its own. China has 4 times the US population yet only a few more medals. Australia is has about the same population as our yet has ten medals and S. Korea is only double our population and ranks 3rd overall in medals with 12. India has a population of over a billion people and finances athletes with a good chunk of hange (3-400 million i believe) yet showed up with 57 athletes this year and only managed to earn a silver in the last olympics.

I dont think its an embarassment to our athletes but its a fundamental problem with the entire system we have for churning them out and supporting them along the way.

** Just a quick note to those of you in Surrey, fencing is sword fighting NOT stealing, buying or using stolen goods.

It's nice to see some of our athletes coming through and getting rewarded for their hard work.

100% agree with you! :) Just about 1 week ago we were tied for 52 and no metals.

No we've got 13 metals and in 17th place. Not too bad for a country of 34 million eh!

Cheers to all the canadian Athletes.
