Hi Captian nemo

When HIV first gets in the body it starts multiplying, causing a very high level of HIV in the blood and other bodily fluids. Everyone is different and depending on the person this could take a few days or weeks.

It can take a few weeks or even months before your immune system respond (starts making antibodies). This means that you can have a high level of HIV in your body, but your HIV test would be negative. They call this acute HIV infection.

I have seen one study where they believe your risk of getting HIV is 20 times higher if you have contact with someone who has acute HIV because the level of HIV virus in the body is very high. This high level of HIV starts to drop as the body makes antibodies. I have seen another study where they believed 50% of the new HIV infections took place during acute HIV.

So to answer your question we believe that most people are probably infectious within a few days but with some people this may take a few weeks.
