If you catch one because you engage in unprotected oral sex or DATY what's the treatment protocol like? Any long term effects/consequences (health wise)?

Hi Noob888

Infections like gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis can be cured with antibiotics. A viral infection like herpes is not treatable but there is medication people can take to reduce the symptoms.

The worst possible outcomes for the different treatable infections are:

For chlamydia and gonorrhea

Disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI) is a rare infection that can happen if gonorrhea is not treated. http://www.stdresource.com/disease/index.php?page=edit&id=22&action=viewfull

How they could affect men if left untreated:
• Infertility.
• Makes it easier for HIV to get into your body.

How they could affect woman if left untreated:
• Infertility
• Increased risk for ectopic pregnancy
• Pelvic inflammatory disease http://www.stdresource.com/disease/index.php?page=edit&id=23&action=viewfull
• Makes it easier for HIV to get into your body

For Syphilis
• In the late stages of syphilis it may damage the internal organs (this could include the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones and joints).
• You could notice difficulty coordinating muscle movement, paralysis, numbness, gradual blindness and dementia.
• A good example of the effects of the later stages of syphilis is the American gangster Al Capone
• It can be dangerous for the fetus if a pregnant woman gets syphilis.

Awesome Health Nurse. Thanks for the info. I read that herpes can be passed on even with a condom, is that true?

Hi noob888

There is a research that shows that genital herpes can still be passed when using a condom, but that condoms will reduce the chance of transmission.

With genital herpes the two biggest things you can do to reduce transmission are:

(1) Don’t have sex even with a condom when having a herpes outbreak.
(2) Use a condom at all other times.

The above is for genital sex.

In regard to oral sex we know that using a condom is probably one of the safest ways to have sex, but I have not been able to find any research that says how effective they are when having oral sex when related to oral herpes.

Let us know if you want us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.
