Hi genhunter

The main harm to children can happen if you give something to the pregnant mother before they are born. Syphilis, herpes (if this is the first time the woman got it), gonorrhea and chlamydia can all affect the baby’s health.

If you are talking about the children that are running around the house we find that sexually transmitted infections are just that in that you need to have sex with someone to pass them on. We do not see this passing via skin contact or social kissing.

The confusion can be that some infections can be passed on by sex as well as other social ways e.g. cold sores (oral herpes) can pass from oral sex or from social kissing. Scabies can pass from the skin contact of sex or from just having skin to skin contact with your child.

There are also other infections like HIV and hepatitis B that can transmit from sex but that are also present in the blood. Sharing items that may have blood on them like a toothbrush may be a risk for things like hepatitis.

Let us know if you want us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.
