STD Clinic vs. Standard Clinic?

Hi HN!

Recently, I've noticed a bit of tingling and very slight burning feeling at the tip of my penis (head area with most of it around the opening). While these symptoms seem very minor, I would like to get tested for STD's and other possible causes. I currently have no discharge and a very mild level of discomfort that comes and goes...

My question is:

I would like to get a thorough exam done. Would you recommend me seeing a doctor at a clinic or just going to the STD clinic? From what I have read on the internet the number of possible causes is quite numerous. I currently have no family doctor ....mine has just retired.

As far the std testing is concerned...which place is faster for testing and getting results?

Thanks in advance!

Hi In the bum

I would recommend going to the STD clinic if you think the cause could be from having sex. You usually have more time at the STD clinic and they can give you additional information as well as testing. They specialize in sexual health.

If we find your tests come back negative and you have the same problem we can refer you to another doctor for a more general check up. In a young sexually active man penile symptoms are most likely caused by STD. Given this they usually like to test and treat for this before doing other tests.

Here is a link to thread we did on testing, it has information on where to get tested.

Just send me a PM if you want to know were a STD clinic is in your area. If you are not close to a STD clinic you can always visit any doctor as they are all able to do the appropriate tests.

why does it take two weeks at an STD clinic for results and only about 5 days when the tests are set up through my doctor? And if we pay $35 when testing from our doctor the results can be in the day after...

Why the difference in times?

Hi wenise

I am not sure what type of set up you have in your health district as the one we have in our area is different.

Results from our STD clinic take a week and there is not the ability to pay for a quicker service. Also there are some tests that are only processed at our lab e.g. syphilis.

I wonder if some of the tests in your area can be done at a private lab with a quicker turn around time and maybe your local STD clinic needs to send it to their local hospital or provincial lab with a slower turn around time.

What province and area are you in?

5 Days Isn't It?

Hi All,
I heard 5 days as well for syphilis, gonorrhea, & hepatitus but that HIV should be tested in about 3 months because it takes a while to show up in your blood. I've heard guys describe "the swab" and the very thought is enough to end one's pooning career!

Hi Rolls Royce

You will be happy to know that you do not need to get “the swab” when you come to the clinic. We have a new urine test that checks for both chlamydia and gonorrhea.

In terms of time period we generally say at our clinic that all results (gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis and HIV) should be back in 1 week. Some specialty tests could take longer. Some tests could be back sooner but to save you calling up everyday we just say call back in 1 week.

The above is the time it takes to process the test in the lab. When you should be tested is a different matter.

For example say you had sex on January 1st and you were concerned. You could do a urine test for chlamydia and gonorrhea on January 8th and it would give you an accurate result. For syphilis and HIV you would need to wait until April 1st before you could go for a blood test that would be really accurate. This is because with syphilis and HIV we look for the antibodies your body produces, which can take a period of time to show up in the blood.
