I'm just curious about the Red Lion hotel in Victoria. Every time I go to book a room, they are usually the cheapest, which is normally a good thing, but they beat out even the Traveller's Inn most of the time, and looking at what they offer, does anyone know why they are so cheap? I mean normally with hotels there is little difference between spending 150 bucks for a high-end four star or spending 75 for a average three star, but with the Red Lion it just seems like they should charge more, and I was just wondering if there was a reason they don't, or if they just lower their prices because of the location (since they are a bit further away from the shopping district than most of the other hotels in the area).

Hotel burned down not so long ago so maybe a bit of a promotional rate. Reopened less than a year ago. Prior to fire was always about $10 more than Travellers. I agree that it is good value given the drinking facilites. Rooms are adequate.

I had a friend who worked in the area for a while lately, and they told me that there were always lots of Asian tour buses and such at the hotel. They also mentioned that they think its owned by an Asian. They probably do package tours from Hong Kong or Tokyo or something of the sort. Big money in that, so they can afford to keep prices low because their income is so high. Just a theory mind...
