Hello,
I had an unprotected vaginal intercourse with a sex worker in Africa after which I had many symptoms that are consistent with HIV ARS. I tested NEGATIVE for HIV1&2 one year after this exposure here in Canada at a STD clinic. I'm still worried that I contracted another HIV strain that's not detected by the test as I heard that there are groups O & N. I am willing to have another test that can detect those two groups to make sure that I'm completely clear, but I don't know where to go. Please HELP!
Thank you,

Hi Engineer

There are two types of HIV. HIV-1 and HIV-2.

HIV-1 has been classified into three groups M, N & O. In group M there are nine subtypes A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J and K. Information from the Public Health Agency of Canada says that HIV-1 subtype B is the main type in Canada, the USA and Western Europe.

Health Canada’s Canadian HIV strain and Drug Resistance Surveillance Program keeps an eye on the different strains and ensures that blood tests are adapted so that they can detect these new strains.

I have contacted our main clinic about the accuracy of our tests. They check for HIV-1 and HIV-2, but our current test will not detect the N group which is in West Africa and extremely rare.

It is difficult to say if what you experienced is HIV ARS. Many viral infections can give similar symptoms and if you were in the tropics you have a large number of different causes.

I have spoken with one of our doctors and they have recommended that if you have a strong suspicion that you could have been infected with HIV (from this extremely rare West African strain). You can come to our main clinic and we can discuss this with you.

Our main STI clinic is at.

Hi Engineer

I forgot to mention in the last post that currently we are saying that the window period for HIV is 3 months.
