What is the easiest way to destroy a bunch of guns?

My uncle passed away a while ago and left a large collection of guns. At first my aunt wanted to bring them into a store to sell but I managed to convince her not to because the store would end up selling them to mentally ill people, drug dealers, terrorist or worst they could end up in some place like Rawanda, Sudan or other places to commit genocide. So we decided to destroy them.

I have already started to destroy some of them but some of them are really solid. I used a hammer on 7 plastic hand guns, which smashed very easily. Yes "PLASTIC" hand guns the terrorist use to smuggle on to planes. At first I thought my crazy uncle hand got them illegally but I check the paper work and they are registered which surprised the crap out of me. I mean what kind of crazy Government would allow people to have plastic terrorist guns.

But I am having problems destroying the metal guns. I spent an afternoon trying to hacksaw through one and it was tough. Apparently the Government wants you to cut through a specific part of the gun in order for it to be considered destroyed and that part seem to be the thickest part of the gun.

Any body have any suggestions on how to destroy the metal guns. Should I go to Candian Tire and a heavy duty hacksaw, blow torch and a sledge hammer. Someone other poeple I know who had to do the same thing in my building suggested using a blow torch.

I think the police will take them and destroy them. (call ahead first)

How will your aunt prove to the firearms registry she has disposed of the guns if you destroy them?

If you do not have a firearms license you should not be handling them anyways.

More Info Here...

Hey Fudd.

You can find out everything you need at the Canadian Firearms Centre:
http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/default_e.asp

And yes, your local LE agency will be happy to dispose of them for you. In fact, I'd suggest you call them ahead of time and let them know what you're planning to do. If you get pulled over on the way there, and don't have a firearms certificate yourself, you could be fined, charged, etc.

Will the police really destroy them or will they use them for there own purposes. We will just send them the pieces as proof after they are destroyed.

Yes, I had to get a licence after another uncle left me his air rifle that he used in one of the Common Wealth or Olympic games. I would have perfered that he left me the medal instead of the rifle. He was hoping I would get into shooting to keep up the family tradition. In his eyes I ended up being a disappointment because behind my back he refered to me as the "yuppie hippie".

I would also like to destroy the air rifle too but family members would get really pissed at me because it is considered a family airloom just like the medal.

I have no problem with anybody owning air rifles as they have a ligitimate purpose unlike other guns.

Fudd,

The Police don't actually destroy them directly. They take them to their property office on Main St., then they are transported to the Firearms Centre, who destroys them and updates the registry info at the same time.

Thanks for the info guys. If they really are destroy when you turn them in and not used by the police to kill people or sent to other countries to arm there military then that will be the way to go. In fact, that sounds so easy that my aunt can handle it and I can save the wear and tear on my arm from hacksawing and use it for beating off :D

Definitely not. I am against any body owning guns.
In which case I find it a bit ironic that your avatar features a character who is not only carrying a gun, but is also known for his repeated wanton use of it on helpless forest creatures. lol

LE can handle it.

They have a gun amnesty program where no questions are asked. They are just happy to have them off the street.

In some places in America they actually offer a $75 reward for any guns turned in, in an effort to get more off the streets.

Good on you Fudd for the doing the right thing.

Two kudos, man: one for doing the right thing, and destroying the damned things; two for realizing just what those things popping out of your shoulders are better for. :p

That was a good read, everyone.

Cheers,

Going through all the paper work now and damm, my uncle had some very expensive habits. He was also big on keeping all his reciepts and paper work. He wasted $3699.99 one shot gun alone. I can think of better uses for the money like sponsering a child from Africa or helping the poor.

If you want to cut them your self just get an angle grinder and some cutting discs, they are pretty cheep and will chop a barrel in half in a minute or 2. Just wear safety glasses and don't do it inside or near anything flammable as there will be lots of sparks.

Gun barrels are pretty hard, and hacksaws are not really meant for that stuff. If you do want to use a hacksaw you want one with small teeth, 32 pitch would be ok.

My family did the same thing when my grandpa passed away, we turned his guns into the local RCMP detachment who did destroy them.

When a gun is registered and you want to declare it destroyed and have it removed from the registry, the police have to be able to identify that the receiver for that particular gun was destroyed or turned in.

If you are just smashing them, I would assume that the serial numbers can't be easily figured out from the pieces and the parts (such as the receiver) can't be identified.

Anywhere other than Vancouver I'd say that you probably are setting yourself up for a world of long term grief from the legal system.

actually no, that's not true. The guns we turned in weren't registered and this was in small town alberta. no problems at all from LE, they were very accomadating.

You will never know what happens to them when you turn them into police. We had a cop in Alberta charged because he was taking guns turned in in amnesty program and had a deal with a gun dealer in northern Alberta to sell them and he would get a cut of the proceeds.

It is a shame to destroy a high end shotgun like that the one you found the receipt for. It is likely a skeet or trap shooting gun, and is not intended for shooting birds or humans. You would get some decent $ if you sold it. With over 300 million guns on the other side of the border, destroying a few here is a very tiny drop in the bucket.

Any gun experts here?? I'm trying to sort out the paper work and registration cards.

What does a "Colt SSA" look like? The reciept reads "Colt SSA, w/documentation". He wasted $9000 on this gun. :(

I assume "Colt" is the gun company but all I can find on the makes on the registrations are Benelli, Winchester, Beretta, Sako, Caesar Guerini and a few others but no Colt. What does it look like is it a pump gun or double barrel? About how long is it?

If your uncle had all of these high end guns why wouldn't you sell them to a reputable dealer so your aunt could have the money? These aren't the kind of guns drug dealers use.

You are on some kind of futile mission of principle. Destroying those guns is like me saying I'm going to help end prostitution by not visiting them anymore.

That cop should be charged to the the fullest extent of the law!!!! Not only did he breach the public trust but he is also endagering the public and his fellow Constables by arming criminals. I hope he get's whats coming to him.

The reciepts dated 1998, so with all the depreciation through the years its probalbly not worth much. He also left my cousin a 1997 BMW and as I recall it wasn't appraised for much either.

As for destrying the guns. For every gun destroyed, there is a life saved.
