Pittsburg "may" move to Wpg

Its mostly an article about Lemieux and him being out for the year, but there is this paragraph that caught my eye...

The Penguins play in Mellon Arena, the oldest arena in the league. It opened in 1961 and the Penguins have a lease there until 2007. Lemieux has repeatedly stated that if the Penguins do not have a new arena in place by then, the chances are it could relocate. One possible candidate may be Winnipeg, which is building a 15,000-seat arena and recently expressed an interest in acquiring the Penguins, if they go on the market.
Nothing I'd like more than to see Winnipeg get back an NHL team. It was a shame that the Jets moved to PHX. Wpg is a great hockey town.

True. The Jets moved because of greedy ownership, not because of a lack of fan support. Too bad Gretzky didn't buy them when they were still in the Peg.

They are discussing b/c exchange rate is at 1.28. Next year the monies collected that are given to Alberta teams as a subsidy will stop b/c as John Davidson said ..How can Columbus send money to Calgary when financially at the new exchange rate Flames are doing better than the jackets.. same with Edmonton etc ..

Will Peg fill the seats for a while ..yes .. is there a enough corporate Winny to carry a team not really ... but they could manage ... after they lost the team they will not get another... Bettman has already said he will only give one more franchise in the South ...
I hope peg did get the pens..but sorry aint gonna happen unless Bill Gates opens his head office their ..

Having a great hockey town isn't enough. As much as i would like to see a team in Winnipeg i just can't see it happening.

The financial problems in Canada with hockey teams is legendary.
TO does well. To the best of my knowledge Vancouver is doing well, but thats it. The rest of the teams are bitching about the cost of there franchise, and are still bitching. Winnipeg would be another team we would add to the list.

Of course there are teams in the USA that aren't doing so shit hot either.

I think when the CBA is resolved. There could be other teams in Canada, but not until. --- Kev

Bettman is an ass, he seems to want to remove hockey from Canada. He doesn't like small market cities, even if they do have good fan support.

Minneapolis got a team back after they lost the Stars, I don't see why Wpg could not get a team back either.

Kev, you are right about Canadian team financial woes, but maybe the Cdn dollar will be worth more than the US by 2007. That should help solve some things anyway. :p

It much deeper than that .. 1 Winny would need a new stadium ... ie..see Canucks have financial problems,,the reason why they are here and doing well this year.. and last is

1) exchange @ 1.28
2) better team on ice
3) GM Place

You see Orca Bay makes money ..Canucks pay them rent every night big bucks... Orca keeps the money and Canucks cry poverty (minus last year/this) see Britney spears will play here.. Kid Rock ...Tina Turner Shania.. the list goes on .. year round conventions concerts etc. .

Minny proved they could try to do that plan too .. basically owners go in try to make a deal for team .. and get an arena for free.. Winny .. cant have that double relationship ..

Orca-Canucks like differing taxes, profits, RRSP's with spouse etc.. think how normal cpouple try to "launder" or for a better word statigize ... who declares what ..think about when two power houses like Canucks / Orca does it ...

Thus Winny will stick with the Moose..never NHL

Love to see another Canadian team in the Canadian game, but it would be a big surprise to see it happen. That snivelling, lying, little sack of ex-NBA crap that runs the league for the owners is a big road block as far as putting another team in Canada goes.

It is interesting to see how the cities which have lost teams in the past support the teams that they now have:

Denver = several hundred consecutive sellouts (I think since day 1 of the Av's), hugely profitable, and multiple Stanley Cups (although at least the first Cup should be considered as belonging to Quebec City).

Minnesota = constantly selling out, doing okay performance wise, and the fans can't wait to salute Bertuzzi as an All-Star Game Starter.

Atlanta = failed as the Flames. Generally considered to be failing as the Thrashers, although performance is better this year.

San Jose = close enough to Oakland to be a return to a close market. Do okay on the balance sheet, inconsistent on the ice.

Ottawa = okay, hardly an example of a modern era departure and return, but what the hell, they are the only Canadian example. Outstanding on the ice, the captain promises the Cup this year. They're still in financial doo doo, but working on it.

Denver, Minnesota, Altanta, San Jose = all big corporate markets. Ottawa = not much of a corporate market.

Bettman? Corporate man. Not a hockey man.

A Portland team? Or even Seattle? Bettman would put them in the Pacific Division, while leaving the Canucks to travel through multiple time zones for every divisional game. That said, I agree that there is great attraction to the rivalries with Calgary, Edmonton, and Colorado.

Sign me a Canadian hockey fan who would love to see more teams north of the 49th, but isn't holding his breath.

I live to serve. :p But hey! The Cdn dollar was worth more in the 70's, it "could" happen. Think positive!!

I'm not living in Wpg no more, (I'm in LA) but I would seriously consider moving back to Wpg if they got a team.

Its funny Canuck fans complain about schedule and say they have it bad ...and Eastern fans/teams complain they do ...

Its arena deals.. where owners can put in a team for say 750 million and get the arena as the deal either from prev. owner or city .. think about it their basically getting the arena or the team for free whichever way you want to look at it .. Thats why Ottawa is in Financial fisaso .. they dont own the arena they pay dues.. where Canucks pay Orca Bay .. which owns the Canucks... they complain they dont make enough money ..but their owner is raking in the cash. ..thus will leave the team here.

You also must remember.. the root of Players came from Canada .... when more American born players continue to get better and better they will have more viewers and support ..Its just a matter of time...

You must look at this stat ...

What the NYR Rangers get just in TV contracts per year, not including ticket revenues or concession ..

is more than,

Canucks create in Revenue at the gate (ie Ticket Sales)

Well, when compared to the schedule of most eastern teams, the 'nucks schedule sucks. However, the original owners did decide to play here, and the current ones continue to do so, so there must be gravy somewhere.

Not to forget that many of the US teams have been given the building. Not just for hockey, but some get full control and rights to everything that goes on in there. It's like getting a $100 million head start. GM Place, on the other hand, was built with pretty much entirely private money.

Thats what I thought ... and and listend to interveiw with Gallager and Al Straka .. and they denounced that theory ..

They said that Vancouver had one of the better schedules.. in the league . ..

for instance they said sure they may have 1 game on road and 1 back .. but when they come back many times they are here for 4 days ... at home.. where teams from east can be on road for almost a Month without being back at home base ...

He said there are teams that still arrive home night before game at home where Vancouver has yet to do that .. and blasted a few callers on 1040 b/C with the excpetion of this month Vancouver has one of teh best schedules.. and shouldnt complain as in the past they go to Vancouver the morning of the game. ..

In other words there are pro's and con's of everyone's schedule.. I would not like to be on the road for 10 straight personally ...

and remember 5-7 years ago they didnt even use charters

All you need to do is look at the distance travelled over the course of the season. The Rangers, for example, have several "road" games in, wait for it, New Jersey or Long Island. They don't need to travel as a team, they could just meet at the enemy rink! A road game to Jersey gets Rangers home before the kids know that they're on the road. They probably live closer to the New Jersey rink than to MSG. The Kings and the Ducks are another good example, although they do get the longer eastern trips as well. I'm fairly certain that the Canucks log more air miles than anyone.

The Leafs don't leave their time zone for the rest of the regular season, and likely won't in the playoffs unless they make the final.
But the posts about dollars are right. Like it or not, hockey is a business to these guys. They're gonna go where they figure they can make best deal and the most greenbacks.

Sure I bitch about it, but it is a fact of life. Kinda like, ....aww, never mind.

I thought the same too untill I listened to teh debate about travel time versus home time .. where they calculated whats easier flying 4 hours to play a game .. and having 72 hours in your own house with wife kids ...your own bed .. or talking a 1 hour bus ride to Long Island but only having 24 hours in your own bed with your wife , kids etc ..

That was the point Eastern Fans were making .. we always see it one way when we are on one side of the fence.. , just a fact of life ..

Of course, there are those who think that 24 hours with wife and kid are enough to make a guy go visit Gina.

And, while it's clearly a personal opinion, Gallagher and Strachan? I can't stomach either one.

Pat Quinn: ~ other Eastern teams say same ..often

Quinn unhappy with road schedule

They say the road can be a lonely place.

And for Leafs coach/General Manager Pat Quinn, the road isn’t just a lonely place but a pretty tough place to win hockey games as well. Especially when the road schedule is as unforgiving as the Leafs schedule has been.

"We all know that every time I say anything about this issue I get accused of bitching and complaining about the schedule," said Quinn with a chuckle. "This is not a bitch, but the fact is this is not a good schedule. We had too many home games at the start of the season and we are paying the price for it now."

While Quinn made his feelings known about the travel, most of his road warriors were pretty happy with their play.
