Hello Nurse,

About 1.5 years ago I had my first and last enounter with an SP. We had unprotected oral sex but intercourse was protected.

About 3-4 weeks after I started noticing the urethral opening on my penis change in size. It looked swollen and the opening started to turn red. At the same time, my penis glans started to darken in color, from pink to purple. The glans have also started to look very dry. Aside from the physical symptoms, theres no discharge and no pain in urination. I went to see my family doctor right after and was tested negative for syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia. As pre-cautionary measures, my doc perscribed me a single dose of erythromycin which did not do anything. At that time my doc said it maybe just some physical changes and to ignore it, which I've done so for over a year.

Fastforward to today, the redness is still there around the urethra opening and the glans are still very dark in color. I've started to urinate much frequently - it feels like I cannot hold going to the bathroom. At times while at work - 8 hour day - I would goto the bathroom about 6-8 times.

I went back to my doc and she gave me apo-sulfatrim ds which also did nothing. Each time the urine tests came back as normal. I was referred to a urologist which all he did was a physical exmaination and said I had nothing to worry about.

To top it off, i've recently started experiencing joint pains in my right leg around the pelvis. The pain comes and goes but on certain days I wouldn't even be able to walk unless I take pain killers. I feel that the joint pain has started to move downwards towards my knees.

I've also tried doxycycline and other anti-biotics ( cipro and Ofloxacin) to no avail.

My doctor keeps insisting that I have nothing wrong and seems to dismiss all the other symptoms I am experiencing. I have also had a ultrasound to look at my kidneys and bladder which they said theres nothing wrong.

I have never had ANY of these problems until my first and last encounter with an SP. I worry that my health is slowly degenerating. I am absolutely sure there is something wrong with me.

I used to be a very health individual - I am only 27yr old.

I'm at my wits end.

I have another appointment with a urologist soon and hope he can give me a second a opinion.

Sorry for the long email but I hope you can help.

Nothing is worse than knowing you have a problem but unable to find a diagnosis to begin treatment.

Thanks.

If you could shed some light on what potential problems I may have I would greatly appreciate it.

"Dr.'s" have examined you in person, yet you come to a forum for answers???. Nobody can help you here.
Just looking for opinions from Health Nurse. From all the cases she's dealt with perhaps she may have seen my symptoms and can provide some insight.

=======

Thanks for the advice Anica and all the other responses.

Its very difficult to see the symptoms if there is no erection, however once erect, its clearly visible that theres a problem.

For sometime I tried to tell myself that its all in my head but its just hard to ignore the symptoms. The crazy part is I found cases on the internet with the exact same symptoms however they all mention they have been to multiple doctors, tried different meds to no avail.

Thanks.

I made the same post on a medical forum and someone suggested I get tested for Ureaplasma. Has anyone ever been diagnosed with Ureaplasma and can provide some info?

I did some research online and it looks like its something that most GPs would normally test for however the symptoms matches what I've been experiencing.

I called my GP and she had never heard of it before.

Hi desperatetimes

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It can be very frustrating when you do not feel well, especially when you do not know what is causing the problem.

It is difficult to diagnose conditions over the internet, but I can certainly give you some ideas that may help.

It appears that you have had the regular testing done and been treated with some medication. Currently we only test for chlamydia and gonorrhea from the urethra (pee tube) when checking for sexually transmitted infections. Testing for ureaplasma (Ureaplasma urealycticum) is not a test done at our clinics.

Ureaplasma can exist as normal flora in the urethra so there is still some debate over what effect it has on the body but, it has been implicated in causing urethritis (burns when you pee, discharge from the penis) and can be treated with antibiotics. Given that you do not have any symptoms of urethritis I don’t know if a test for ureaplasma would be useful for you.

As you believe this is connected to your visit to a SP I would suggest that you visit a specialist STI clinic and get them to have a look. I know at our Vancouver clinic that we can refer people to specialist if needed as well.

A rare condition called Reiter's Syndrome (have a look at the link) can cause inflammation of the joints and urethra and given your symptoms should be looked at.

If this visit to a specialist STI clinic does not help your situation, it may be time to look to alternative medicine. I have no experience in this are but can provide you with a link to the British Columbia Naturopathic Association. You can find a list of naturopathic doctors at the site.
www.bcna.ca

Also do not underestimate the effects of stress or worry on the body and if you do not get any results from the above people sometimes seeing a counselor can help.

I am not sure were you are living so if you need assistance in finding any of the above resources just send me a PM.

Let me know how it goes.

There are not very meny doctors that have that much experience with STDs these day.. and i once heard that there are over 40 STD or STI out there .. meny of them not expected in this country but it can happen.. and who would be able to recognize it..or what test to give to detect it.

My biggest concern still is the attitude that one find from some health professionals . towards . patients that come in for testing and treatment..aspecialy when you say you have multiple partners . mainly SP's . They get this attitude about them that it serves you right and now you have to pay for your wrong doings. If this world was more acceping of that fact that we are sexual animals .. and we enjoys and get rid of there stigmas.. we may have a heather society.. that will go get check ups more often.. No STD is caused by one person .. some one gets it some where and give it to another and another.. with out knowing most times. that they have it them selves.

Hi maxx50

I could not agree with you more in that this attitude is not helpful and can prevent people from discussing their sexual concerns or getting a test.

If you are concerned about this or it is your first time visiting a health care professional for a test. It may help to visit a specific sexual health clinic.
