Waiting period for HIV/STD tests

Hello Health Nurse, thank you for all you do here.

First, I recently received my results and I'm negative/non-reactive across the board (Yay!) as I expected. I commend the folks who work in the clinics. Very professional, non-judgemental and compassionate.

But I must comment on the waiting period for results. The one week that we have to wait for results to come back can be excruciating! Even though I had negligible risk, there was still a tiny demon in the back of my mind asking me "what if?" And that went on for a week. I was confident that I was negative going in to the tests, but when night came I had trouble sleeping, had anxiety attacks, etc.

I understand that there is an "instant" HIV test available. Do the clinics intend to carry these in the near future? It would be a godsend for folks who would otherwise have to face up to a week of terrible anxiety which can cause its own health problems.

Thanks again.

Hi turquine

Congratulations on the results and thanks for the feedback. We are hoping to get some of the instant HIV tests for certain situations, but do not have any at this stage. Feedback like this will certainly help us with giving a reason as to why we should have some in our clinics.

Waiting for those test results can be really hard. I have seen many people who have had the exact same symptoms that you experienced problems sleeping, high anxiety etc...

Here is a link to a doctor who is offering the rapid HIV test in the Vancouver area.

Is it just the waiting time for the HIV test that causes the greatest concern or does waiting for all the tests cause the same problem?

Please feel free to comment or ask us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.

For me it was the wait for the HIV result that caused me the anxiety. None of the other STDs (to my understanding) are as potentially life-changing. If I had caught syphilis or NGC or similar I'd duly take my antibiotics, contact my sexual partners and notify them and carry on. If the HIV result came back positive...well, the repercussions would be enormous.

I think perhaps it might be different for people who are married or in long-term relationships who stray that would also feel great anxiety during the wait for the other STD results. In any case, a shorter waiting period would be very welcome no matter what the test was for.

Thanks again for all you and your colleagues do.
