Dear HN
I started having problems getting an erection a couple of years ago and started taking viagra and cialis. this seemed to help for a couple of years but lately the magic pills don't work very well anymore. Do you have any suggestions?
Do you think that the abundance of eroticism in society is having something to do with it, desensitizing the brain to what it thinks as erotic? Like what was erotic 20 years ago isn't anymore. Any thoughts on that?
My history, I am late 40s, fairly fit, in good health. I don't get much sex anymore, mainly masturbating about once a week for about an hour.

Hi dorefans

The first thing I would suggest is that you visit the doctor that prescribed the medication and get a check up. They will be able to give you an exam, do blood tests and check blood flow to make sure that there is not an underlying health problem or maybe a side effect of any medication you are on.

There are varies causes of erectile difficulties such as blood flow issues, medication side effects, diseases, psychological issues, relationship issues etc..

There are also a number of solutions to this problem such as medication, mechanical devices, sex therapy, behavioral training, couple coaching or a combination of a few of these.

I am not sure if the abundance of eroticism has something to do with it. The one thing we do know is that as we get older the penis is like other parts of the body in that it does not work the same as it did when we were 18 e.g. we may need more direct penile stimulation. The other thing we know is that you need to feel aroused.

As this can be a common issue for many men and is not our specialty area I have been in contact with a few local experts and we are in the process of writing a piece about this topic and will provide some resources for people.

IF my hormone or testosterone test shows that i am low in those areas, what can be done about it? Are there meds to increase your testosterone level?

Sorry, what's HRT?

I suggest you get some hormone tests....mainly testosterone. Even if you are within range, I am guessing you will be at the low end and being at the low end is just as bad as being lower than the low end. Then look at HRT after the following...... depending on your physical status, maybe also look at your nutrition and current weight/bodyfat levels, fitness level, and go from there. This all plays a big part of sexual function.

What exactly is a testosterone test? Do they test your blood for testosterone level?

Has the testosterone shots helped getting an erection?

Do you know what a urologist does? Does he/she do more blood tests? Physical tests? Or..?

I can only speak to the testosterone issue. The doc can give you a prescription for testosterone, and you go in to a clinic once a month for a shot in the hip-- that's what I'm getting. Other options include a patch worn on the arm but I have been told those aren't as effective. Another bonus is increased physical strenght and feeling of well-being (not a huge improvement but noticeable). It's not expensive, about 30 bucks for 6 months.

My understanding is that the "normal range" for testosterone is a score between 10 and 30, and that testosterone levels are highest in the morning (maybe the cause of those morning woodies??). Your GP can order a testosterone test (do it first thing in the morning) and if low you can be referred to a urologist where he or she will look at all possible causes. BTW, my doc tells me that the single most common problem for loss of desire is a relationship problem! Good luck.
