Where does one go to get tested for STD's?

Just curious, and I want to have a test that shows I am completely clean but I have no idea where to go.

Also, is it a free service, if not how much would it likely cost?

Would it be covered by insurance?

Do I need to see a doctor to get tested or is it just by appointment?

Hi Valoo

You did not say were your location is so I will just give some general information.

You can get a test done at any doctor’s office or you can go to a sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic.

The services at a STI clinic are generally free and if you have provincial health insurance it would be free to visit any doctor.

Most doctors and sexual health clinics require an appointment but there are some clinics that do not need this e.g. a walk in clinic, our Bute street clinic in the west end.

You just want to make sure you get a test for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV and hepatitis B (only if you have not been vaccinated).

Here is a thread we did on getting tested:

Our two clinics we have in Vancouver are.

BCCDC, STD Clinic
655 West 12th Avenue
Vancouver, BC V5Z 4R4
604-660-6161 (for appointment only)

Bute Street Clinic
1170 Bute Street
Vancouver, BC
Phone: 604-660-7949
Hours: Monday-Friday 11:00am - 6:30pm
(drop-in only)

Here is another link to other STI clinics in BC.

Thanks, ill look into that. Also I have been vaccinated for Hep. B, but I know that some vaccinations require boosters every 10 years or so. Is this the case with Hep. B?

Hi Valoo

If you had the 3 shots over 6 months and you have a normal functioning immune system there is at present no recommendation for future booster shots.

If your immune system is not working to well e.g. HIV, your doctor may suggest extra shots depending on the results of your blood tests.

Please feel free to comment or ask us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.
