Hi HN,

I heard something about a "while you wait" HIV test. Can you tell if the public clinics offer this type of testing and if not where they might be available?

TO and Ontario have implemented these tests. The tests are manufactured in Richmond?? Comunity buses use them as well as point of care situations. I do not know of aywhere else other than Ontario using them at this time although it is obviously possible.

Hi dreamer222

INSTI is a rapid HIV test that has been recently approved for use in Canada.

It is made by biolytical in Richmond.

I have contacted the manufacture and they have said that there is currently one doctor in the lower mainland who is offering this test. I have contacted Dr Naran and he has said that people can call his office directly to discuss testing. I believe the test costs $30.

Dr.Minesh Naran:
Suite Number 218,
1940 Lonsdale,
North Vancouver V7M2K2
Tel: 604-986-4214

We currently do not offer the test at any of our clinics.

Hi all

I have had some people interested in the rapid HIV test which is made by biolytical. I have found out some new information that I thought the group would be interested in.

So far I have only been able to find one doctor in the lower mainland who offers the test. This is still.

Dr.Minesh Naran:
Suite Number 218,
1940 Lonsdale,
North Vancouver V7M2K2
Tel: 604-986-4214
http://doctornaran.com/index.html

The new information is that he does not bill MSP for the visit. This means you do not need to bring your care card and that you only provide the information you want to tell him. He understands that people want discreet and confidential testing.

$30 covers the visit as well as the test. Call for an appointment.

Here is the website for the company that makes the test.

If you know of anyone else who offers this test please let me know.

Let us know if you want us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.

This kit comes in an individual pack as well, to purchase and conduct the test yourself if you have privacy concerns or limited access to a clinical provider in your area. However, regardless of who performs the test on you, a reactive result requires a second test by a different system of testing, before a positive conclusion is made. This makes the individual pack a good solution to eliminate possibility but not to confirm positivity.

Hi mmdma

Currently the rapid HIV test cannot be bought by individuals in Canada to do at home. It can only be purchased by health care providers for point of care use only. I have heard about tests that can be ordered in the USA and performed at home but have not heard about these in Canada. If anyone has information about this please let me know.

Thanks for pointing out the need for a 2nd HIV test if the rapid HIV test is positive. With the rapid test if you test positive we need to take a regular HIV test and send it to the provincial lab for testing. Before they say someone is HIV positive they need to do a number of different tests for confirmation.
