I may be a bit off topic but I found this site during my search and found it quite interesting.

I have an epididymitis and my wife was reading on the web that this could be caused by gonorrhea or chlamedia. Evidently, being mid-thirties and married for a few years, she thinks I cheated on her.

We did a 2min urine test (no sure for what exactly) and it came back negative. My doctor said they often have no clue of what causes the epididymitis.

I'm being treated for an infection with Spectra DS and hopefully it goes away. But, could I actually have a SDT without having had sexual contact with anyone else? Toilet seats? Shaking hands with someone that just touched him/herself?

Other considerations is that I use my saliva for lubrification when I masturbate. Could that be it too?

Thanks, I like the option of asking these question anonymously.

Hi Frank

Sorry about the delay we have been away for a few weeks.

Epididymitis is the inflammation (it gets bigger and feels painful) of the epididymis. The epididymis is a tube that connects the testicle’s with the vas deferens. It is at the top of your testicle and you can feel it yourself.

It is great that you went to your doctor as you want to get any testicular (ball) pain checked out. Testicular torsion also shows up as testicular pain and is a medical emergency needing surgery.

Your doctor is correct in that we often do not know what causes epididymitis and they believe that there a number of different bacteria ranging from the sexual transmitted infections (STI) like chlamydia and gonorrhea to ones from the bowel like E coli.

I can understand why your wife is worried about epididymitis after reading it on the web as they often believe that the cause is most likely an STI for hetersexual men in your age group. This is mainly due to the large number of chlamydia cases we have, approximently 9000 last year just in BC. Reassure her that there are other causes.

On the other hand if you have had other partners, I don’t know your situation but you are posting it in the PERB health information forum so I am just assuming. It is easy to get chlamydia and gonorrhea from receving oral sex without a condom BBBJ. I’ am not sure if your doctor did a chlamydia and gonorrhea test for you which would require you not to urinate (pee) for 2 hours and would then be sent to a lab. If he did the test straight away in the office it was probably just a urinalysis which is a dip stick you put into the urine and checks for things like blood, ph, nitrates etc. This urinalysis does not check for chlamydia or gonorrhea. It sounds like the medication your doctor gave you was Septra DS, is this correct? It is used to treat urinary tract infections.

So if you have had no other partners apart from your wife and your wife has had no partners or both of you have tested negative to STI in the past. In other words you are 100% sure this is not an STI causing the epididymitis the situation would probably resolve on its own with the medication given.

If you think it could be an STI I would recommend getting tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia. The problem with chlamydia is that it is so common and most of the time you do not have symptoms to it making it easy to pass back and forth between partners. If your doctor gave you Septra DS this would not work on chlamydia or gonorrhea.

I have not heard of saliva being a problem when used for masturbation.

If you don’t want to bring this up with your doctor you can always come to one of our clinics.

You can always send me a PM if you want to discuss things in more detail.

Does this answer your question?

Best of luck
