Dear Health Nurse,

Should I be concerned as to the effectiveness of a condom if lipgloss was present on the lips during oral sex and a massage using massage oil was provided about 10 minutes before that?

There was no breakage in the condom, but I am wondering how damaging these two things could be to the condom, and hence, dangerous to me during vaginal sex.

Thanks.

Anything with oil breaks down latex

It doesn't necessarily have to break down to the degree than the spem gets through to be potentially dangerous. Viruses are only microns in size, and sperm of course is a full cell.

If you are using any sort of oil based product (lipstick, lipgloss, oil, lotion etc.) either scrub up completly, or use a non latex (ie polyurethane) condom such as Avanti.

There are also non oil based personal lubrications/massage 'oils' you can use if you want a slippery experience without having to wash up in between.

Hi victor777

There is evidence that oil based products e.g. petroleum jelly/Vaseline, baby oil, mineral oil, vegetable oil or hand cream, can break down the latex in condoms. So if you are using oil based massage products it is best if they do not come in contact with a condom.

Many lip gloss products are oil based so they may deteriorate condoms. But we are assuming that the amount of lip gloss present would be small so it is hard to know how much the risk of condom breakage would increase. We did not find any research specific to condoms, lip gloss and oral sex.
