For anyone that thinks Vancouver is a shallow, self-centred city, with a high level of pretentiousness, well YOU ARE SADLY MISTAKEN! Calgary is more pretentious, more shallow, and more self-centred than we'll ever be. The whole time flying over there I thought it would be nice to visit a really laid back city. BOY WAS I WRONG! I've never felt so "out of place" to put the term lightly. Don't get me wrong there are some really nice Calgarians, but it certainly isn't a welcoming city. Vanxouver is a lot more welcoming and kind hearted. This is what I noticed, so much for me moving there.

Where's Vanxouver? I'd like to compare...

Cause there is no way you meant Vancouver there.. no way Jose.

I'd be curious to hear about your experience because from the time I land in Calgary to the time I take off.... I keep telling myself how friendly and welcoming it is. No snotty attitude... Ppl actually say Hi to you on the street??? downtown?? And not to ask you for money most of the time!

Sorry about your bad experience though :(

But I've experienced both cities as an outsider and your comment couldn't be further from reality, my friend.;)

This post must be a joke...

Vancouver isn't friendly at all...

While in Calgary I was amazed how friendly and healthy everyone looked.

In Vancouver, walk down Commercial Street and 75% of the people look so fu cked up it's not even funny, Hastings 100%, and Robson, just stuck up wannabe's...

The hospitality in Asia Might be better then Van, but for the smiles/hello on the street- Vancouver is definitely a happier place to be!

Nobody smiles in Asia.. unless you are doing business with them and they want your money! :)

Can I like both cities?

Calgary is a very friendly city, but it lacks the laid back vibe of parts of Vancouver. Can I like both?

Hell ya! I like both as well... for different reasons ;) love montreal too :D for completely different reasons!
Something great about all these cities... but saying Vancouver is most welcoming and friendly than Calgary isn't quite true IMHO.

Calgary is growing hella fast and I guess that is something that may not be true in the future, but for the moment it still has a smaller city vibe whereas Vancouver has a big city, more jaded kinda vibe. The snotty attitude (which doesnt apply to everyone of course) is something I haven't experienced in Calgary like I have in Vancouver. But of course, there are many exceptions in both cases.

I've just notice it's a lot more difficult to just strike up conversation with strangers out of nowhere most times in Vancouver. You get a lot of confused looks of "why is this person talking to me?" confusion, not too sure how to react. You can totally tell by the facial expression.. I've always found it strange. But I think ppl aren't too trusting perhaps from past experience.. Vancouver is the place I've been ripped off in various ways the most. A lot of great ppl, but unfortunately a lot of sketchy ppl creates a different atmosphere...which doesn't come across aas welcoming for new ppl to the city. IMO Calgary doen't have that yet, probably why I instantly feel the difference everytime I go..;)

Only exception is dog ppl :D Dog ppl are great and very friendly Anywhere I go when I'm out with my dog. :D Non dog ppl/dog haters...errr... let's not go there.

Every time my friends from home bring up the "laid back" comment, I chuckle. I too, used to think that when I was here as a tourist.:)

A friend of mine (who is from here) says ppl may seem laid back but in fact are passive aggressive. :p

If I told you guys the kind of stuff my neighbours pulled at the last place I lived.. OMG.. passive aggressive was dead-on in that case. Ppl are also very serious about not only following the rules, but taking full responsibility of ensuring others do as well. Me? Not so much into rules when they're just silly.. I think: Get a life. This has got me into trouble here. hehe it's ok, I love it. The more they got upset, the more motivated I got to see them blow. ;) Figured if they finally blew up, they let it all out and chill the fuck out. Only managed to get them to the edge... then I moved. :p

Friendly Calgary story

I moved from Toronto to Calgary 17 years ago. First day on my new job, it's 7am and I'm all alone in the elevator heading up 20 floors. Another guy gets in
just before the doors close, looks at me, smiles, and strikes up a conversation.

My initial Toronto reaction was, " Fuck - 7am and this guy is hitting on me". Of course, I was dead wrong. He was a normal friendly Calgarian and I now know that it is a good thing to be open and friendly, not judgmental and angry.:)

Calgs
If Calgs is getting uptight it's only cuz the uptight fuckers from uptight places are moving to Calgs... The only cool ones are from SASK and NFLD/NS/NB, the Islands and of course chicks from the PQ, they're sooooo hot...
There are snooty people in Calgs, but you'd never see them in public...
And during Stampede, most Calgarians get out-o-town...

One thing that keeps being echoed when I talk to people who aren't from Calgary is that Calgary workplaces are uptight. I don't know if this is true compared to other cities.
I have met numerous people who have moved to Calgary from the west coast, and a lot of them say that Vancouver employers are laid back and easy going, as long as the job gets done.
I think part of the stress and attitude in Calgary might come from driving through 3-4 construction zones to get to and from work every day. I still find Calgarians to be very friendly people though. Vancouverites are friendly from my experiences as well.
When I was in Vancouver, I was sitting on an outside patio having a coffee in the rain. Yeah, coffee in the rain. Tell me I didn't look like I was from out of town. People would stop and just talk to me for no reason. So I can't say that Vancouverites are stuck up. I will say that the hotel staff in Vancouver are amazing and some of the best I have ever seen. I stayed in the Marriott Pinnacle downtown and the Sheraton Wall Center. Both have amazing and friendly staff. Even better than in Calgary.
Try visiting Detroit. When I lived in Windsor I used to go shopping in downtown Detroit 2-3 times a week because it was 5 minutes away. Ask a simple question like the time or directions, and they almost pop a cap in your ass.
Toronto... Nobody seemed to want to help with directions. If you ask for directions there is a standard answer. "I don't know" and keep walking. I guess thats what happens when you get tied up with big city values.
Most people in Calgary aren't even from Calgary. Especially if you were here during Stampede. If you had a bad experience while here, odds are they were tourists.

I went during Stampede

I didn't mention the Stampede factor, yes I went to Calgary during Stampede, so I guess it was probably more tourists that I interacted with, which I assumed were resident Calgarians, but wow that was not pleasant! There's this one restaurant Singapore Sam's where I almost knocked out the waiter, I've never had anybody screech at me for wanting to pay my bill!?!!!! WTF! I went to Cowboys and felt like I was at the old Luce's on Hastings (Amazing playmate waitresses, really nice too, enough silicone to create a Huffy bike :D ) but the tension in the air was so thick I was eyeing the exits to make a dash for it, even though there were about 20 of us there. I don't know if it's the booming economy or the fact that 14 year olds have $16/hr jobs at Quiznos with no threat to their job security that there was an air of pretentiousness. Downtown street walking nobody seems to know where they are! "Excuse me ma'am do you know how I get to the SW from here" "NO!" Okay...sorry I asked! In Vancouver I've always had people go out of their way to help or atleast make some attempt to help me with directions if asked. Calgary traffic is pretty bad, that whole Deerfoot/Blackfoot merge thing to get into downtown was really weird, and $30/day for downtown parking? People do like to party though, and Calgary does a better job than Vancouver (Vanxouver ;) ) in showing that. 8th Ave where Flames Central is was shutdown and turned into a really nice party street with side shops showcasing chuckwagons, old fashion drills, entertainment stages and stuff, that was pretty cool.
