Dear everyone, is it possible to get HIV or STD from infected soap? If there is a cut on my finger, and I washed my hands with infected soap, what is the chance of getting HIV and STD?

Please help thanks

Hi hpnogood

We do not see STD/HIV being transmitted via soap.

There is scientific evidence that washing with soap and water will kill viruses and bacteria such as herpes and HIV.

Does this answer your question?

Soap kills herpes

Health nurse, could you expand on this a bit more. Does showering and soaping up after the deed(s) significantly decrease the risk of getting nailed by the herpes virus? And what about a little soap in the little guy's eye? Sure it stings like hell but would be a consideration.

Thanks.

The herpes virus will die very quickly once the temperature drops or the moisture around the virus dries. This usually occurs within seconds but it may be theoretically possible for the temperature and moisture to hold on long enough for the virus to survive outside the body for several minutes. If the virus only lives for a a few seconds or even minutes then you would have to get into the shower very quickly after having sex to make a difference to transmission.
While putting soap on mucous membrane or inside the “little guys eye” (urethra, pee tube) would probably damage or kill the HSV virus, it would also be very irritating. We would not recommend doing that because with irritation there may be openings in the skin and that could increase the odds of getting an infection.
