Is it standard practice for a nurse to make regular visits to the massage parlors?

Which municipalities?

By whose authority are visits by medical people done? Is it the city hall?

Do they regularly (or at all) test for HIV?

What else do they test for?

Have they been making the girls aware of the newly found throat cancer risks caused by HPV when having multiple uncovered oral sex partners?

Do they provide the girls written information in different languages other than English? Many of these girls can not understand English much more than grade 5 level.

Hi georgebushmoron

The nurses from our organization have been going to massage parlours in Vancouver and Burnaby for the past 4 years. Some of the public health nurses in the Fraser Valley have been visiting parlours as well, especially in Surrey.

There are no regulations that require medical people to visit massage parlours. We have decided to offer our services because our organization has a mandate to provide sexual health services and education.

The services we offer to the massage workers are completely voluntary. We offer blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis and we can also to do Pap tests and check for chlamydia and gonorrhea. These are the same tests that would be offered if people come into one of our clinics. We offer condoms and vaccinations for hepatitis B. We provide sexual health information and informal education services.

All the services offered are free of charge, confidential and people do not need to use their real name.

Language can be a big barrier and we usually partner with an organization called SWAN that has health workers that may be able to provide translation services. There is also a telephone translation service we can access if necessary. Some of our written information is available in several languages.

Please feel free to comment or ask us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.

Thank you for your answers, but I feel compelled to ask one again which was unanswered:

Have they been making the girls aware of the newly found throat cancer risks caused by HPV when having multiple uncovered oral sex partners?

Hi georgebushmoron

We answer questions the best we can if someone asks, but we have not been actively telling people that they will get throat cancer if they perform unprotected oral sex.

The reason for this is that they have been doing research for at least the past decade and there still appears to be a need for further research.

The latest study that has been published adds another piece to the puzzle, but there is still not enough information out there to determine exactly what the risks are.

The last thing we want to do is make people paranoid and really worried over something that may turn out to be a relatively low risk overall.

You certainly would not want to dismiss this information and who knows it may be a good reason to give this new HPV vaccine to men as well. As new information becomes available we will be passing it on.

We would certainly welcome any feedback or thoughts on the subject.

George. Just as a point of information, I was wondering what you based your comments on with respect to the throat cancer risk? If there was something in the paper I missed it.

Thanks.

Hi daty lover

If you had the 3 shots over 6 months and you have a normal functioning immune system then there is no recommendation for future booster shots at this time.

If your immune system is not working well (e.g. you have HIV/AIDS), your doctor may suggest extra shots depending on results of your blood tests.

Hi uncleg

We have been going to parlours in Greater Vancouver for the past 4 years. In most of the parlours we are able to offer testing to clients and workers if the parlours are open to that. In reality we have a low profile and we are usually in the back room talking to the women.

We don’t usually have contact with the clients. Your idea is a great one and we would certainly be willing to see clients if the parlours agreed to that.
