Alberta man clings to life after attack at Mexican resort

An Alberta man on holiday in Mexico is on life support after being attacked and beaten at a Cancun resort, his family says.

Jeff Toews, 34, of Grande Prairie, was found Monday on the grounds of the Moon Palace Resort by security guards, his brother Murray said.

Toews, the father of a three-year-old son, was vacationing in Mexico with his wife, Natalie, and nine other couples from northern Alberta.

His brother said Toews is in an induced coma and on life support after receiving serious injuries to his head and back. He was attacked while walking outside a nightclub at the resort.

Another brother, Gregg, who organized the vacation, performed CPR until the ambulance arrived.

The resort is not being very co-operative and police have made no arrests, Murray Toews said, adding his family is working with the Canadian Consulate in Cancun.
Maybe I should rethink going there this winter.

No offence, but have you read the local news lately? Seen how many beatings/stabbings/shootings happen around our own nightclubs downtown?

No matter where you are, you always have to be aware of your surroundings. Plus, we may not know the whole story here...maybe he was drunk and being obnoxious in the club? Maybe he was flashing money around?

I've been going to Mexico for quite a few years now and have never felt unsafe. Of course, there are parts of any city anywhere in the world that you should avoid. It is sort of sad that this occurred outside a resort nightclub because you expect to be safe at the resort itself.

Looks like a nice resort too.

Oddly, it doesnt say if it was residents or resort patrons in the fight... this type of thing can happen anywhere, and does... quite often.

You can get into trouble anywhere you go and there are things you can do to avoid these troubles but I think to me the thing that bothers me about Mexico is that it APPEARS as if the Mexican police just look for an easy way to solve the 'crime'.

Three particular cases have been 'solved' by the Mex. police that just seem too easy.

If I was involved in a situation, I would feel better if the fuzz was actually trying to find out what happened and who is/were the perpetrators, of course, it wouldn't much matter if I was dead.

In my own imagination!!
I have been in some dicey areas...

...too like bad areas of Trinidad, Jamaica, Venezuela, Peurto Rico. However I am a six foot one, 260 pound guy with martial arts training? I also never get drunk and am always aware of my surroundings. There are shitty bad neighborhoods in any city, any where in the world. The media are attention whores. I lived in Trinidad for 4 years and they average 380 murders a year. They also have travel adviseries in Canada, and the States warning us not to go there because it is very unsafe. I mean look at the girl in Bermuda who was stabbed and killed. I was in Bermuda at the time. Look at the girl who went missing in Aruba. This Mexico thing is not new!! Any tourist destination you run that risk as most of these places have a very poor population and the people realize that tourist have money and make easy marks. IMO. P.S. most of these police forces(Mexico) do not have to even try to screw up as they are so inept and corrupt to begin with!

A friend of mine was attacked in Downtown Vancouver a few weeks ago. No one seemed to be making a big deal out of it.

Sorry, I was aiming for sarcasm. The media is fanning those sensationalist flames again.
Sorry, I wasn't meaning to bash you, I was just upset with the sensationalism too.
