Dear HN

I know that for example Syphilis has a potential window period of 3 months. But what happens if say you are on a regiment of 100 mg twice daily minocycline for acne? How do they take into account when someone's on antibiotics for part of the window period?

And what about other potential issues like with gonorrhea and chlamydia? It's a rather complex situation isn't it?

Thanks NH!

Hi gotak

We recommend that people wait for four weeks after completing their antibiotics before testing for STI’s. The concern is that recent antibiotic use may interfere with the accuracy of the test. However if someone is having signs and or symptoms of an STI we would recommend doing the test straight away.

Anyone who is on long term antibiotic use and at risk for STI’s should get a test done rather than waiting until they are off the medication. But if you are only on antibiotics for 1-2 weeks it would be best to wait the 4 weeks before being tested.

This situation only refers to the gonorrhea and chlamydia tests. Tests which look for the specific antibodies in your blood like syphilis, HIV and hepatitis would not be affected by antibiotic use and can be tested at anytime.
