I don't know about salad, but years ago when I lived and worked at high elevations in South America I enjoyed the coca tea. In Peru I used to find it on the supermarket shelves next to the other herbal teas. I never felt any sort of high from it, but it did reduce the nausea I felt at very high altitudes.
Many of the middle-class professional people I worked with used to chew coca leaf. I never tried chewing myself, but it certainly didn't seem to turn them into druggies. My coffee addiction is probably more injurious to my health than responsible use of coca leaf would be.
