Had my wallet stolen yesterday, *sigh* all the ID crap gone, that's gonna be FUN to replace, including the driver's license, SIN card, credit cards, bank cards etc. Oh, did I mention the $1153 I had in my wallet? CRAP! I was on my way to the bank to dump it in too!!! ARGH... it WOULD have to be right then too.

I'm FAIRLY certain it was when two guys sat next to me at a sushi bar as I had lunch, they sat down, looked at the menu for a bit and then left. Other than that I can't imagine where it could have disappeared to (20 mins earlier I had bought a book, and then sat down in the sushi restaurant to eat!)

I certainly HOPE Karma a la "My Name is Earl" exists and will kick their butts. *sigh* It's gone, there's not much hope of me getting it back, and now all I get to do is waste the next few days TRYING to replace all my IDs.

I know we all would like to say we would return the wallet with everything in it as is. But would we?

I've found a loaded wallet and actually had to chase the person down to return it... and, Hitrack, life was pretty shitty for me at the time. I think we all act as our morals and ethics tell us to, despite the circumstances.

Another related question... Would you return extra change if a sales clerk gave back way too much... or if your a sales clerk would you tell the client if they overpaid (and you could pocket the difference?)

I don't know if I've ever recieved any Karmic payback for "good deeds" other than feeling good about what I did. I do enuff crappy things in life that a few good deeds don't come close to balancing the scale.

Makuro, sorry to hear about the loss... hope it's not a nightmare getting all your I.D. etc. replaced.

Keep photocopies of all your cards and important stuff in wallet (not the money). Makes it much easier to replace and know what is missing.

Back when I worked in a bank, I often had people come in to turn in cash that they found on the ground in case somebody came in and mentioned that they lost it. I'm not talking about wallets with cash in them (although that happened quite a lot as well - and they were a LOT easier to return to the person they belonged to), I'm talking about loose cash just lying on the ground. The cynic in me says that most people would keep the cash, and maybe return the rest or throw it away, but based on my own anecdotal experience, it really seems like most people would try to return it all.

Sorry to hear about having your wallet stolen. I had mine stolen once a long time ago. The biggest pain was getting all of the ID replaced.

I don't know if it helps anyone, but when carrying money I usually carry most of it in a pocket rather than in my wallet. For instance, if I got say something like $500 then I'll put $100-150 in the wallet and the rest in a pocket or two. The hope is the money already in the wallet is enough to make the prick robbers happy enough to go.

I was in the mall food court at Mrs Vanellis getting pasta. It came to around 7 bucks, gave her a 10 and got change and a 5 back. Explained that this was wrong, gave her back every thing and she then gave me back some change and a 10. Once again I explained this was wrong ang gave her everything back. This time I got change and a 20 back. I said thank you and left with my food. Went back 2 days later and told the manager and gave the 20 to her. Kind of felt like the scam artist who guest starred on Cheers.

I found a little old lady's wallet once. I took it to her apartment and she didn't even realise she had lost it. She was so glad to have it back she almost cried. That made me feel better than I would have felt spending a lousy couple of hundred bucks or running up her CC's.

Replacing your ID, while inconvenient is easy enough. It's watching for and stopping Identity theft that is a pain in the ass. If you haven't already, file a report with the police regarding the loss. You will need a file number to quote in order to remove yourself from the responsibility of debts made in your name.

As an aside, everyone should photocopy the front and back of everything in their wallet. Two reasons, if your wallet is lost or stolen, it helps you remember every card (credit and otherwise ie-care card) that was in there so you can cancel/change them. And most cards have a number to call stamped on the back, it saves time looking up all the numbers to make the changes.

Or join one of the free services most credit cards offer that will keep track of this and can report, cancel and replace with a single phone call.

I was in a store one night and I bought a pack of smokes. I gave the clerk a 20. I took my change and cigarettes, and walked out of the store. As soon as I got outside I realized she had given me not just my change, but the 20 I had given her. Right away I went back in the store and I told her there was a problem with my change. Before I could say another word, she went off about how I had already left the store, all bets are off, tuff luck for you, etc. It gave me a great deal of pleasure to smile sweetly, thank her for giving me my 20 back with the change, stuff it in my pocket and walk out. If she had given me the chance, I would have gladly given her the money back.

DAK - I can't blame you, that clerk deserved what she got.

To answer someone's burning desire to know how I paid. Fortunately I had frequented that restaurant a lot, so they knew me. And thankfully I had some money at home, I walked home, grabbed some cash, came back and paid.

I'd say most of the time I've been morally/ethically correct and done the right thing. But I must say the temptation has been there, especially if I'm going thru a rough time or something. And I always tell the clerk/whatever that they gave me the wrong change, if I notice. *shrugs* I dunno, I guess it's just not worth it, doesn't affect me a dollar or two one way or another.

I've never had the opportunity to run across a wallet with $$$ in it, but I think I'd probably still return it, everything intact.

I've already gone thru the 5 stages of grief... d - denial, a for anger, b for bargaining, d - for depression and a for acceptance.

d - Oh my god, no I did NOT just lose my wallet
a - Aw CRAP, this SUCKS! I had $$$ in it! You bastards!
b - PLEASE oh PLEASE someone return it, I'll give ya $100?, $200??
d - ugh, this sucks... it's christmas.. bah humbug!
a - c'est la vie, what can I do? Notta. Kiss the cash good buy, go slowly to replace all the crap I've cancelled, and hope karma goes and bites that guys ass and gives him gangrene of the penis!
