Hi funnguy694u

We have done a thread titled “What to do when the condom breaks.”

https://perb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=44070

In your situation I would suggest you go to the clinic for a STD check. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are two common infections that spread this way and can be detected in a test 7 days after sex.

Having a blood test for syphilis and HIV is also recommended, but you would need to wait out the window period of 3 months before having an accurate result.

If you have not been vaccinated for hepatitis B they can offer you testing for this and the vaccine.

If you get any symptoms like painful urination (peeing), discharge from the penis, rashes or sores, go to the clinic straight away.

It is hard to know what another persons sexual health status is as most sexually transmitted infections show no symptoms (you feel fine). It certainly helps when the person is going for regular check ups as long as their doctor/nurse is offering all the tests. I have seen some people go for a “sexual health checkup” and the only thing they are offered is a blood test for HIV.

Here is a thread about getting tested.

What about rapid tests for hiv that do no require the 3 month wait time? I don't understand why they are not widely available. They have been tested and found to be reliable. You also don't need the 2 week wait time for results. Some tests involve a simple mouth swab.
I find it appalling that these rapid tests are used considering that antiretroviral treatment is thought to be a good recommendation as soon as potential exposure occurs.
I don't know why there was such a large AIDS conference when alot of the information presented is not filtering through our medical industry or to the common person.

Hi my2cents

There is a range of new HIV tests that are coming on the market, some of these are rapid in that they give you the results straight away and other are rapid in that they do not have the 3 month window period.

There is a rapid HIV test that has been developed by a Richmond company. It is rapid in that it will give you your result in 60 seconds.

Their web site is:

http://www.biolytical.com/

this test still has the 3-month window period.

The other type of test that has been developed is the HIV nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT). This technology is great in that it reduces the window period for HIV testing. Using this new technology 95% of people would show a positive result between 8.4 days and 9.6 days after infection.

The main reason for the delay in these tests is funding. There is a great deal of money invested in the ELISA testing and it is seen as the gold standard around the world in HIV testing. The only problem with it is the long window period.

At this point in time in BC this test will not be available for a few years.
