All of you will be happy to know that this new test means that most men will not have to get the swab inserted into their penis to check for gonorrhea. I was asked by a PERB member to post this information as they believe and I agree that this can be a barrier to getting tested.

We are still recommending men get a swab in the penis for gonorrhea if they are having symptoms e.g. discharge, painful urination, or if they are a sexual contact to someone who has gonorrhea. The reason for this is that the swab allows us to culture the gonorrhea and show us if any of the bacteria are resistant to certain antibiotics.

The new test is called the gonorrhea NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests). This means that gonorrhea and chlamydia will be tested from the one urine sample. We are still recommending that you do not urinate (pee) for 2 hours before the test.

This testing is available in BC and I am not sure what the situation is in other provinces. Just ask your health professional if the urine test you are doing covers gonorrhea as well as chlamydia.

The gonorrhea urine test is not recommended for woman as it is not sensitive enough (would not pick up all cases of gonorrhea).

Please feel free to comment or ask us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.
