My new contract is with a company whose boss is not too smart. Anyway, he also hires this other guy to do some simple stuff that has a quick turnaround time and looks pretty. My stuff is very complex and has long periods (months) before something tangible is produced, and what is produced is hard to understand, but somehow my boss gets the "feeling" he needs it but doesn't fully understand why. Furthermore, what I produce doesn't look pretty but is "brainy".

So this other guy gets to show off something new virtually every couple of days that he's done, and he's become the big hero. But his stuff is so simple I laugh at the low level of competence he needs to accomplish it. Yet my boss keeps saying his dreams are being realised by all this. This guy is an idiot, but my boss is more of an idiot.

I feel like dumping this contract. My boss keeps coming up with "ideas" every day and wants us all to do them. Trouble is, half of them are half baked and I don't appreciate someone who does not think things thoroughly before asking others to do it for them. Fuck I hate this shit. RANT RANT RANT

hey.
yeah i can totally relate.
thing is: even if you are far more competent, if the stupid guy is able to sell his crap better than you do to this idiot of a boss, ... well. there's nothing you can do about it. bummer.
thats why i want to have my own company as soon as possible...

georgebushmoron... you're being blinded by feelings. Don't let feelings get in the way. You're trying to please someone and you feel like they don't understand you.

You have to hand it to that "idiot" coworker for being smart enough to find an easy enough task to do that will impress people like your boss. A simple case of getting more bang for your buck for your efforts, and that coworker of yours is being quite succesful at it. You are probably smart enough (and from the sounds of it, overall just smarter than the guy you're putting down) but it all depends on who you end up selling your services to.

There is nothing worse than trying to sell a valuable service to someone who cannot appreciate it or is becoming skeptical about the usefulness of your talents.
If your stuff takes so long to complete, you are probably smart enough and capable enough to sprinkle it here and there with a few "flashy" add-ons that will definitely put you on a different light to your boss. Smoke and mirrors man. Most average people fall for that and the businessman in you has to learn how to profit from it. Don't be a proud snob unless you are working with other proud snobs that can appreciate it, otherwise your working life will be miserable. Bottom line is that you are now working somewhere where your particular talent cannot shine and until you find a place, a niche where you can grow doing what you do best, it is smart to blend your skill with some icing that will dress it up and make it more presentable to those people that are too near-sighted to appreciate your value.

And remember that SIMPLICITY is beautiful. And remember there is no such thing as a victim.

Why would (should) a contractor rant about the incompetencies of an interim manager? Surely your contract renumeration isn't based on how "pretty your results are" :D

been there done that got the t-shirt

GBM, one bit of advice, don't show any resentment towards the other guy - it will come across as petty. Do your job, hopefully your contract is worth way more than quicky boy - and at the end of the day, realise that the boss may still not know why he needed wwhat you did.

nobody said life was fair.

I've also had this happen. I've come to the conclusion that half the people around who are "successful" are the ones that are the best bull shitters and best at selling themselves. It seems the actual quality of work doesn't seem to matter to some bosses.

One thing I'm terrible at, is bullshitting someone. Yeah, I know some of you are going to tell me I better get good at it, cuz that's biz. Perhaps they are right.... but I can say one thing, my skill set requires so much focus and attention to detail that it leaves me little time to develop the persona of a bullshitter.

Or is it just me, believing that intelligent people with skills in the end win out.

It's like a guy takes his car to a shop where he wants to custom his car: he wants a new paint job and he wants performance mods to the engine. Dummy slicks on the paint and he's done in 2 days. I go to work on the engine and it's a high performance issue with turbo chargers, injectors, and we need it to be stable, maintainable, and won't blow out the engine. The car owner is impressed with the glossy purple paint job and can't figure out why what I do takes a lot longer and doesn't have the intelligence to realise the complexity or the necessity to do the job right. Makes me want to do the job cheap and fast, and take his money, and who cares if two weeks later down the road his car catches fire and he gets 3rd degree burns :) I'm almost at that point right now.

The frustration of what to do GBM.

That in itself is the key in the sense you gotta take a deep breath and
relax first then let the cognitive ability take over.

The saying I quoted doesn't necessarily mean you have to become a
bullshitter, it also implies that when the wind blows the tree that doesn't
bend will break.

Of course I don't know your work situation but am just trying to give you
ideas as food for thought.
In this crazy world of business and work it is most important to become
as flexible as possible with changing ideas and new perspectives.
Those who stick to one avenue of thought will eventually go the way
of the dodo with the ever changing business and or marketing savy.

I hope this has helped you some.
