Aside from the normal stupidity of my fellow human beings there have been a few other events that have me in a particularly foul mood.

Accused hit-and-run killer wasn't avoiding law, says lawyer


The man accused of trying to flee the country after a young Calgary woman was run down and killed was clinically depressed, and did not have any intention of trying to escape justice, said his lawyer.

Defence lawyer Balfour Der said there is no evidence to show Colin Jones, 48, was trying to avoid the long arm of the law when police arrested him on a Toronto-bound plane, days after 20-year-old Lindsay Giacomelli was fatally injured in a Bonaventure Drive crosswalk.

“He was clinically depressed for a number of years and there is evidence to support it, that he did not know or have the requisite intent to escape civil or criminal or liability," said Der.

Jones was charged with hit and run causing death following the St. Patrick's Day, 2005 incident.

I believe that as part of our justice system everyone should be afforded a fair and vigorous defense but this is total bullshit. To start with Balfour Der is the second greasiest lawyer in Calgary (only behind André Ouellette who I wouldn't squeeze out a piss of he was on fire) and is known for dodgy tactics but even for him this is unbelievable. I understand that depression can be a debilitating condition but to attempt to use it as an excuse for homicide just doesn't wash. If Jones was that out of touch with reality then he shouldn't have been behind the wheel in the first place. Will be interesting how that shyster will try to explain Jones' one way travel plans. Fuck off and own up to what you did!

Asbestos worries haunt squatters

For years, the band has been trying to relocate squatters who took up unauthorized residence in the former housing for married military personnel after the land was returned to the Tsuu T'ina by the Canadian Forces in 1997.

Disabled teen inside blazing wood shed


WINNIPEG -- Police say seven or more children may have been involved in a horrible act that sent a 14-year-old to hospital Saturday night with smoke inhalation.

But investigators say many of the children who allegedly locked disabled teen Brian McKay in a shed before setting the structure on fire are too young to be charged.

Const. Jacqueline Chaput said at least five children between the ages of eight and 11 aren't old enough to face charges under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

McKay, who suffers from spina bifida and has difficulty walking, said he was at a play structure at a housing complex Saturday afternoon when a group of children pushed him into the wooden shed.

They then sealed the door with a metal bar and set the shed on fire before running away.

Hart fights to have clan's former house named historic site

One of the former residents of the Hart House fears the controversial plan to turn the property into a small-density housing complex will get the rubber stamp today when it goes to city council.

Bruce Hart, whose father Stu Hart owned the historical home until his death three years ago, wants council to reject the plan to build 16 new units surrounding the brick mansion.

Hart and a group of residents who live near the famous house are also fighting to get a provincial heritage designation for the building.

Yes the Hart family is a Calgary institution, yes the Hart House is a special piece of real estate but when you've sold something I think you lose the right to dictate or lobby how it will be used. I loved my first vehicle and after I sold it I was pained to see it around town and the owner clearly not giving it the same TLC I had but I couldn't donkey slap him and suggest that he stop driving the shit out of it or spend more time armoralling the tires. Fuck, the Harts sold their house for what I can only assume was a boat load of money so they should just STFU. If it was that precious to them then then shouldn't have sold it in the first place.
