The bottom line: 91.7% of Iraqis oppose the presence of coalition troops in the country, up from 74.4% in 2004. 84.5% are "strongly opposed". Among Sunnis, opposition to the US presence went from 94.5% to 97.9% (97.2% "strongly opposed"). Among Shia, opposition to the US presence went from 81.2% to 94.6%, with "strongly opposed" going from 63.5% to 89.7%. Even among the Kurds, opposition went from 19.6% to 63.3%. In other words, it isn't just that Iraqis oppose the American presence - it's that their feelings are intense: only 7.2% "somewhat oppose" and 4.7% "somewhat support."

Maybe there are reasons for keeping American troops in Iraq, but "it's what the Iraqi people want" really doesn't seem to be one of them.

The majority of Americans do not support the presence of the US in Iraq either. So, who's keeping the Americans in Iraq? By chance, could it be a couple of American guys by the name of Bush and Cheney who have an interest in oil?

[In response to "Do you think the American people are prepared for a long, costly, and bloody battle with significant American casualties?"] "Well, I don’t think it’s likely to unfold that way, Tim, because I really do believe that we will be greeted as liberators. I’ve talked with a lot of Iraqis in the last several months myself, had them to the White House....The read we get on the people of Iraq is there is no question but what they want to get rid of Saddam Hussein and they will welcome as liberators the United States when we come to do that."
Meet The Press with Tim Russert. [6] (March 16, 2003)

[In response to "We have not been greeted as liberators."] "Well, I think we have by most Iraqis. I think the majority of Iraqis are thankful for the fact that the United States is there, that we came and we took down the Saddam Hussein government. And I think if you go in vast areas of the country, the Shia in the south, which are about 60 percent of the population, 20-plus percent in the north, in the Kurdish areas, and in some of the Sunni areas, you’ll find that, for the most part, a majority of Iraqis support what we did.

I never believe surveys anymore these days.

This study doesn't seem to say how many people were surveyed. There are a couple of notes about a survey early in 2004 and one earlier this year where the survey target consisted of 2300-2700 people.

This also brings up the question of how the survey was conducted? By telephone, by cell, by door to door, or computer? In a country like that it may be hard to get an actual "representative" group.

Though, I found this to be an interesting quote:

"The findings of this second survey show that even though Iraqis have a more negative attitude to foreigners, especially Americans, they are moving closer to American values and are developing a much stronger sense of national identity," said Mansoor Moaddel, a sociologist at Eastern Michigan University and at the ISR.
They may hate foreign occupiers (who wouldn't), but they like the values represented by the "west".

I read the table with the poll results and there is a big difference between the different groups.

There was a poll taken in Germany during WWII and the results were surprising similar to the Iraqii poll.

93% of all Germans oppose the presence of Allied troops in Germany.

The break down by groups

Nazi- Germans 99.9% opposed the Allied troops
non-Jewish Germans 85% opposed
Jewish Germans .5% opposed

Total 93% of all Germans opposed allied troops in Germany.

Uhhh, would that be the good guy Saddam Hussein put into power by the CIA, the one supported by the U.S. with weapons and chemicals? Is that the one you want to give them back?

Only if he continued to funnel oil to the French and Russian fucks under the guise of the "UN Oil for Food Program". That was great since it kept world crude prices high (GREAT for Alberta) but not at the dangerously high price its now trading at. Want to make sure we stave off a recession.

They looked and couldn't find the WMD's so they must be gone. If he wants new ones he can get them from France and continue to murder those Kurds and other Iraqis who didn't want the Americans around anymore.
