Hello health nurse,

I have read a number of writeups on the HPV virus and the question of whether it can be transmitted to someone's genital area through a handjob. The answers I have read ranges from "no" to "possible theoretically". I like to know how long can a genital type of the HPV virus survive on someone's hand and then be transmitted to another person's genital area. Do the genital type of HPV virus not need a certain environment to survive otherwise it dies off very quickly. In other words, can a genital type HPV virus actually survive on someone's hand long enough to be transmitted to that person's genital area. Thank you.

Hi gentleman

In regard to your question I have done some research on this and have not been able to find much.

I came across one study were they had taken samples from the study participants hands and genitals. In several cases they found the same type of wart virus on the hands as was on the genitals. In most cases there was no sign of visible warts. This is where the theoretically possible HJ transmission comes from.

To answer your question we do not know how long it can survive on a persons hand and if it did could it infect another person’s genital.

If this is a concern you could get the person to use a glove and it would not hurt if they washed their hands before giving a HJ.

Sorry about the vague answer, there is still so much we do not know about the HPV virus.
