Who would have bet that the Oilers had enough moxy to dispose of the Detroit Red Wings. The Presidents Trophy winners.
The first two periods were unnerving as Edmonton wasn't on their game, but by the time the third period came around Edmonton found their legs and came out with the win.

Now i hope Calgary can thump on the Ducks and we'll have two more Canadian teams moving on.

That was a hell of a third period. Edmonton looked really good in the end. That was a sweet game-winner too. Sure is easy rooting for those Oilers! Calgary looks good too for sure.

Heh. I knew that they'd win if I quit watching!

I watched the first two periods and the Oilers weren't doing too well, down 2-0. So at the 2nd intermission I shut off the TV and went down to Penthouse Massage to spend a great time with Lauren. When I finished up with her, the horns were blaring outside and people were cheering in the streets, and Oil had just won the game!

I drove down Whyte Ave and the Blue & White Mile was already underway, and it took me an hour to drive through.

Here's hoping that the Ducks tire out the Flames! :D

I'm fricken happy the wings are out!!! I'm sick of that team!!

Just some random thoughts on the game:
* I heard a lot of car horns outside, shortly followed by police sirens. Hope everyone partied safely...
* For Oiler fans old enough to remember, that game looked a lot like when the Oilers beat the Islanders to win their first Stanley Cup. The Wings played hard and gutted it out, but when the Oilers turned it on it was game over. It looked a lot like a changing of the guard.
* Hard to not feel bad for Manny Legace and Steve Yzerman. Legace's paid his dues and is a battler, but he's just a little guy and letting in goals just seem to deflate him. Stevie Y? What can be said? He such a hero and a class act. He did nothing but praise the Oilers throughout the series, then almost leads the Wings to a victory. I thought he was Detroit's best forward last night. That was a performance reminiscent of Mario Lemieux leading Team Canada to victory in the 2002 Olympics, but since the Oilers won the game that performance will be lost. No wonder so many young NHLers grew up idolizing him.
* Here's hoping the Oilers get another Battle of Alberta with the Flames. The Oil haven't matched up well with Calgary all year, but they grew up a lot this playoff series by beating Detroit. They are on a roll right now and will be very tough. GO OILERS!! :)

not an oilers fan, but i was fucking cheering my ass off for a win over the asshat wings!

typical bettman/nhl crapola ... give detroit a vacation season, don't call half the crap that Shanahan and Chelios were getting away with (and penalizing Pronger for just being on the ice every five minutes!) and the loser fucks lose! good riddance!

and watching Calgary (boo-hiss) and Edmonton (hiss-boo!) pound the pud out of each other will be very entertaining ... the only thing better would be my stupid neighbours taking shovels to each other and making the world a better place.

go Sens! (hahahahaha!)

The only things wrong with the Battle of Alberta will be:

1: That Bettman won't know which team should be favoured / screwed by the officials, as both have postal rather than zip codes.

2: That only one will survive to have a chance to knock out another south of the border based team.

Positives:

1. Should be an excellent series with heart!

2. Bettman (how did a runt-like idiot like him get a job at the NBA in the first place?) doesn't know where Calgary and Edmonton are, so we won't have to look at his sneering little mug. Go back to the NBA Gary, if they'll take you.

Hmm, how does Ottawa vs the survivor sound? Bettman, and the Yankee tv networks would cringe. Two small market teams, both in Canada. The CBC would cringe, as all those Leaf's fans will still be watching the 1967 playoff reruns. Love to see the Habs go the distance, but I just can't see it happening this year.

Boy was I wrong about this series. I know Detroit is older and plays in a weaker division but I thought they would make short work of Edmonton given their problems in net and their inability to keep up with Detroits' high powered offence. In the end Roloson was the difference, he out-goalied Legace and the Wings din't play with enough urgency, thinking they would be able to score when they needed to. Oh well, I can only hope Anaheim wins game 7 against Calgary. It was good to see Iginla get bitch slapped last night though. Two solid lefts . No doubt Sutter will be getting on him for that. As their best scorer he can't be dropping his gloves every time he or one of his teammates gets hit. That's what Simon is for. Despite all the penalties this is as exciting a playoffs I've seen since '94.

'94? Now you're making me weep.

Game 7. Third period. Late third period. Nathan fucking Lafayette hits a goalpost with mere minutes to go. One stinkin' goal difference in the whole seven game series.

We could still be chanting "1940". Even more importantly, we'd be more current than the Leafs, which is now a chant of "1967".

Canada vs US. East vs West. Big apple vs the village by the sea. The team that had to win to meet expectations vs the team that had lots of help and luck getting to the finals. Easily the most entertaining final in the past twenty years.
