I was into my doctor today asking her a couple important Q's....The one that was of most importance to me was,how safe is a condom with HIV ???
She explained to me that a person should be using condoms with spermicides cause they r finding that regular condom dont do the trick...
She explained to me that the virus is 450,000 times smaller than a water molicule and passes threw the latex easily...You can pick up spermicide gel by it's self ot get condoms that already have it added.....

HEALTH NURSE PLZ REPLY IF MY DOCTOR IS WRONG !!!!!!!!

Your doctor is accurate on the size - but I believe inaccurate on the spermicide

Sperm is 400 microns. The AIDS virus is .1 micron

I'm not sure how the spermicide would affect the man in terms of acquiring HIV, however, I am quite certain (and I hope the health nurse will verify this), that spermicide is actually detrimental for the woman should a condom actually break.

Spermicide is an irritant, and can therefore cause microscopic tearing and irritation inside the woman. This in turn creates much easier access to her bloodstream (where HIV actually needs to get to become an issue).

You are correct - you can transmit viruses through a condom - even if it doesn't appear to be broken. Microscopic tears will allow viruses to pass through, even though they are too small to have visable leakage of sperm.

To reduce the risk, make sure you use plenty of water based lube.

Equally important - make sure the condom doesn't come in contact with anything oil based. That includes hand cream, tanning lotion, chapstick and even lipstick. If she is wearing lipstick, lip gloss, chapstick etc. during oral - change the condom before proceeding to intercourse.

There is lots of discussion regarding the effectiveness of condoms. Here is some info that we think is accurate:

We think the info you were given by your doctor is inaccurate.

There is a lot of evidence that latex condoms, used correctly and consistently, are very effective and give good protection against HIV.

Gravitas posted a good link;

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/pubs/facts/condoms.htm

This information is provided by that site:

“Laboratory studies have demonstrated that latex condoms provide an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of STD pathogens”.

Polyurethane condoms are also effective, but other types made from animal membranes (i.e. lambskin) are not recommended for HIV protection.

Originally spermicides such as nonoxynol-9 were used with condoms to help prevent pregnancy. Studies also suggested that it may be useful as a microbicide (a chemical substance that kills viruses and bacteria).

However, studies since have indicated that the frequent use of nonoxynol-9 can increase vaginal irritation, which may raise the risk of contracting HIV and other STDs. Therefore we no longer recommend using condoms with nonoxynol-9 for HIV prevention.

A note on lubes and spermicides

If you wish to use a spermicide-lube, then put it on the INSIDE of the condom and use regular (safe for latex) lube on the outside.

Try the spermicide-lube before having sex as it can irritate a penis as easily as a vagina if sensitivity is present!

Couple things to remember:

1. nothing is 100% safe,

2. you still have a much greater chance of dying in a car accident than ALL other causes COMBINED!

Play safe, not paranoid!
